A method of optimizing network processing in a system comprising a physical host and a set of physical network interface controllers (PNICs) is provided. The physical host includes a forwarding element. The method includes determining that a set of conditions is satisfied to bypass the forwarding element for exchanging packets between a particular data compute node (DCN) and a particular PNIC. The set of conditions includes the particular DCN being the only DCN connected to the forwarding element and the particular PNIC being the only PNIC connected to the forwarding element. The method exchanges packets between the particular DCN and the particular PNIC bypassing the forwarding element. The method determines that at least one condition in said set of conditions is not satisfied. The method utilizes the forwarding element to exchange packets between the particular DCN and the particular PNIC.

Specializing virtual network device processing to avoid interrupt processing for high packet rate applications

Example methods are provided to perform traffic forwarding between geographically dispersed first site and second site and to support traffic forwarding via a trunk interface. In one example, the method may include receiving, by a first edge device at the first site, network traffic having a plurality of packets via a trunk interface of the first edge device from a virtual tunnel endpoint, the virtual tunnel endpoint having decapsulated the packets prior to communicating the packets through the trunk interface. The method may further include reading an overlay network identifier from each of the packets to identify a source overlay network of the received network traffic from the multiple overlay networks; modifying each of the packets to include a virtual local area network (VLAN) identifier; and forwarding modified network traffic to a second edge device at the second site to identify the destination network based on the VLAN identifier.

Traffic forwarding between geographically dispersed sites

Described herein are systems, methods, and software to enhance the management of packet filters for host computing systems. In one implementation, a method of managing packet filters for a physical network interface on a host computing system includes obtaining dispatch statistics for media access control (MAC) addresses associated with virtual nodes communicating over the physical network interface via a virtual switch. After obtaining the dispatch statistics, the method further provides identifying a filter configuration based on the dispatch statistics, wherein the filter configuration classifies received packets at the physical network interface into processing queues based on attributes identified in the received packets, and applying the filter configuration in the physical network interface.

Enhanced network processing of virtual node data packets

Described herein are systems, methods, and software to enhance the management of packet filters for host computing systems. In one implementation, a computing system may identify media access control (MAC) addresses and communication statistics for virtual nodes communicating over physical network interfaces of the computing system. The computing system may further prioritize the MAC addresses based on the virtual network interface ports and physical network interface ports that the MAC addresses were identified on, and generate a filter configuration for the physical network interfaces based on the prioritization and the communication statistics.

Specializing virtual network device processing to bypass forwarding elements for high packet rate applications

A method of creating containers in a physical host that includes a managed forwarding element (MFE) configured to forward packets to and from a set of data compute nodes (DCNs) hosted by the physical host. The method creates a container DCN in the host. The container DCN includes a virtual network interface card (VNIC) configured to exchange packets with the MFE. The method creates a plurality of containers in the container DCN. The method, for each container in the container DCN, creates a corresponding port on the MFE. The method sends packets addressed to each of the plurality of containers from the corresponding MFE port to the VNIC of the container DCN.

Some embodiments provide a queue management system that efficiently and dynamically manages multiple queues that process traffic to and from multiple virtual machines (VMs) executing on a host. This system manages the queues by (1) breaking up the queues into different priority pools with the higher priority pools reserved for particular types of traffic or VM (e.g., traffic for VMs that need low latency), (2) dynamically adjusting the number of queues in each pool (i.e., dynamically adjusting the size of the pools), (3) dynamically reassigning a VM to a new queue based on one or more optimization criteria (e.g., criteria relating to the underutilization or overutilization of the queue).

The disclosure herein describes a computer system that facilitates multi-core processing of VXLAN encapsulated packets. A VXLAN encapsulated packet typically contains an outer Ethernet header, an outer IP header, an outer UDP header, and an inner Ethernet header. The computer system hosts virtualization software which includes a virtual switch, a VXLAN module, and a load balancer. The load balancer monitors a port on the virtual switch. This port is dedicated to receiving VXLAN encapsulated packets and can be referred to as a VXLAN VMKNIC port. When the traffic statistics on the VXLAN VMKNIC port surpasses a predetermined threshold, the load balancer can instruct the physical network interface to allocate a number of receiver side scaling (RSS) queues. In turn, the physical network interface can store received VXLAN encapsulated packets in a number of RSS receive queues which facilitates multi-core processing of the received encapsulated packets.

Method and system for enabling multi-core processing of VXLAN traffic

A method of high packet rate network processing in a system that includes a physical host and a set of physical network interface controllers (PNICs). The physical host is hosting a set of data compute nodes (DCNs). Each DCN includes a virtual network interface controller (VNIC) for communicating with one or more PNICs to exchange packets. The method determines that a rate of packets received from a particular DCN at the VNIC of the particular DCN exceeds a predetermined threshold. The method performs polling to determine the availability of packets received at the VNIC from the particular DCN while the rate of packets received from the DCN at the VNIC is exceeding the threshold. The method utilizes interrupts to determine the availability of packets received at the VNIC from the particular DCN while the rate of packets received from the DCN at the VNIC does not exceed the threshold.

Systems and methods for preferentially assigning virtual machines (VMs) on a particular NUMA node with network queues on the same NUMA node are described. A load balancer process on a host assigns multiple VMs to network queues. The assignment of the VMs to a network queues is performed with a bias toward assigning VMs using a particular NUMA node to network queues on the same NUMA node. A scheduler on the host assigns VMs to NUMA nodes. The scheduler is biased toward assigning VMs to the same NUMA node as the PNIC and/or the same NUMA node as a network queue assigned to the VM.
