2-Alkylthio-4-hydrazino-5-fluoropyrimidines can be prepared from 2,4-dichloro-5-fluoropyrimidine in good yield with high selectivity by treatment with 2 equivalents of alkyl mercaptan in the presence of base followed by treatment with hydrazine.

Process for the preparation of

Alkyl esters of 2-fluoro-1-methoxyethylcarbamic acid, which are useful intermediates in the preparation of compounds, such as 4-amino-5-fluoropentanoic acid, are prepared by the electrochemical anodic oxidation of esters of 2-fluoroethylcarbamic acid in the presence of methanol and an electrolyte.

Alkyl 2-fluoro-1-methoxyethylcarbamates

Mono- or dimethylol compounds having water solubilities of 3 grams or less per 100 grams of water are electrochemically oxidized to the corresponding mono- or dicarboxylic acids at activated nickel oxide anodes. The methylol compounds are adducts of 1,2-alkylene oxides with phenols, pyridinols, bisphenols, phenoxy- or pyridinyloxypyridinols or are polycycloaliphatics ring-substituted with one or two CH.sub.2 OH groups.
