Embodiments include apparatuses, methods, and systems for an antenna for a wearable device that includes a bezel on the wearable device to include a conductive circuit path to transmit and receive radiofrequency (RF) signals to and from the wearable device. In some embodiments, the bezel may be formed of a substantially conductive material to form the conductive circuit path. In other embodiments the bezel may be formed of a substantially non-conductive material and may include a conductive antenna pattern located on a surface of the bezel to form the conductive circuit path. A wearable electronic device includes a first member and a second member. The second member includes a first, RF-attenuating, portion and a second, electrically conductive portion. A gap exists between the first member and at least the second portion of the second member. One or more transmitter/receivers, such as one or more BLUETOOTH&#xae;, BLUETOOTH&#xae; low energy, and/or IEEE 802.11 transceivers may be mounted in the first member. The one or more transmitter/receivers are conductively coupled to the second portion of the second member. RF signals generated by the one or more transceivers are emitted from the second portion of the second member.

Apparatuses and methods associated with an antenna formed on a transparent substrate are disclosed herein. In embodiments, an electronic device may include a substrate, wherein at least a first region of a plurality of regions of the substrate is transparent; and a plurality of layers formed on the substrate, the plurality of layers including: a first transparent layer formed over the first region; and a second metal layer formed over a second region of the plurality of regions of the substrate, wherein the second metal layer comprises an antenna. Various systems and methods for radiating RF transmissions outside of a portable electronic device with a conductive case. In an embodiment, this solution includes a conductive enclosure, a circuit board within the conductive enclosure, at least one non-conductive gap between the circuit board and the conductive enclosure, and a radio frequency (RF) connection between the circuit board and the conductive enclosure. The combination of enclosure and gaps can excite certain radiation modes at high frequency bands, such as a cavity-backed lambda-long slot radiation mode.

In various embodiments, a wearable electronic apparatus may include a multi-band antenna to receive satellite positioning signals in a first frequency band and local radio frequency communication signals in a second frequency band, an antenna connector to optionally receive a detachable satellite positioning antenna, and a switch having a switching terminal, a first input terminal coupled with the multi-band antenna, a second input terminal coupled with the antenna connector, and an output terminal, wherein the switch is to selectively connect the first input terminal or the second input terminal to the output terminal, in response to a state of a switching signal received at the switching terminal. An apparatus, such as a wireless portable electronic device, is provided that includes a body formed of a conductive material. The body defines an internal cavity and an opening. The wireless portable electronic device also includes a ground plane disposed within the internal cavity and electromagnetically coupled to the body. The wireless portable electronic device additionally includes an antenna, such as a loop antenna or a monopole, disposed within the internal cavity and electromagnetically coupled to the body such that the body functions as a radiator. The wireless portable electronic device further includes a three-dimensional ground plane extension disposed within the internal cavity so that at least a part of the three-dimensional ground plane extension overlies the antenna. The three-dimensional ground plane extension is galvanically coupled to the ground plane and electromagnetically coupled to the body.

A hinge of a device is provided that serves as a radiator. The hinge includes first and second conductive pin elements. The opposite ends of the first and second conductive pin elements are configured to mechanically engage the device. The hinge also includes an insulator between portions of the first and second conductive pin elements. The end of at least the first conductive pin element is also configured to be in electrical communication with radio frequency circuitry of the device such that the first conductive pin element functions as the radiator.

An antenna arrangement includes a switch having an open state and a closed state, a first antenna that operates as a first active driven element in a first frequency band in response to the switch being in the open state, and a second antenna that operates as a second active driven element in a first frequency band in response to the switch being in the open state. The closed state configures the first antenna and the second antenna to operate in a second frequency band different from the first frequency band by operatively coupling a first impedance between the first antenna and a radio frequency ground, and by operatively coupling a second impedance between the second antenna and the radio frequency ground. The first antenna functions as a parasitic element in the second frequency band and the second antenna functions as an active driven element in the second frequency band.
