Erratic behavior of one or more people within a video stream may be ascertained by analyzing the video stream to detect one or more people and to determine a measure of size of each of the detected people. A movement speed of each of the detected people is determined, and is normalized with respect to the determined measure of size of that person. An average of the movement speeds of all of the detected people is determined. The average of the movement speeds of all of the detected people is compared to an ambient speed. A determination is made that erratic behavior exists when the average of the movement speeds exceeds the ambient speed by at least a threshold. When a determination is made that erratic behavior exists, an erratic movement alert is outputted.
