A method for preparing guanidino acetic acid involves reacting cyanamide and glycine in an aqueous reaction mixture in the presence of a base. The ammonia content in the reaction mixture is controlled to be below 20 g/L, and the dicyandiatrade content in the reaction mixture is kept below 5 wt.-%.

A modified method for preparing guanidino acetic acid (GAA) involves reacting cyanamide with an excess molar amount of glycine in an aqueous reaction mixture, in the presence of a base. The invention relates to an improved method for releasing an organic acid, preferably a carbon, sulfone or phosphone acid, particularly an alpha or beta hydroxycarbon acid, from the ammonia salt thereof by releasing and removing ammoniac and simultaneous extraction of the released acid, having an amine as a suitable extraction means from the aqueous phase.
