A method for manufacturing a synthetic image device includes providing of a focusing element array. An image layer is arranged in a vicinity of a focal distance of focusing elements of the focusing element array, whereby a synthetic image composed of enlarged portions of the image layer becomes perceivable for a viewer. The image layer includes an array of image cells, each being associated with a respective focusing element and wherein the array of image cells has a same symmetry and element distance as the focusing element array. The arranging includes creating continuous image objects within the image cells such that synthetic images to be viewed, all having contributions from one of the continuous image objects, present smooth successive non-parallax alterations upon changing a viewing direction. This creation is performed according to an array of digital image cells of a digital image layer model.

Manufacturing of synthetic images with continuous animation

An integral image device () comprises an array () of focusing micro-lenses (), optionally a reflecting layer () and an image fragment plane (). The reflecting layer is positioned on a same side of the array of focusing micro-lenses as a focal plane of the focusing micro-lenses as such. The reflecting layer is arranged for reflecting at least a part of light incident on a surface () of the reflecting layer facing the array of focusing micro-lenses. The image fragment plane has image fragment structures (). The array of focusing micro-lenses is positioned between the reflecting layer and the image fragment plane. The image fragment plane is arranged to, when being viewed refracted through the array of focusing micro-lenses towards the reflecting layer, reflected by the reflecting layer and refracted back through the array of focusing micro-lenses from the reflecting layer, give rise to an integral image.

Thin integral image devices

A method for manufacturing a printed product comprises provision of a matrix comprising a matrix surface having at least one recess. A first curable compound is applied to the matrix surface in a controlled amount that does not exceed a volume of the recess(es). The first curable compound creep down in and partly fill the recess(es), leaving protruding surfaces substantially free from the first curable compound. The matrix surface and recess(es) are covered by a pickup layer of a second curable compound. The matrix is brought in contact with the substrate surface and the first curable compound and the second curable compound are cured. The matrix surface is separated from the substrate surface, leaving the pickup layer and the first curable compound on the substrate surface. The first curable compound forms printed product micro features at the pickup layer covering the substrate surface.

High-speed manufacturing of printed product micro features

A method for manufacturing a printed product comprises provision () of a matrix comprising a matrix surface having a plurality of recesses. A first curable compound is applied () to the matrix surface to fill the recesses with the compound. The matrix surface and the filled recesses are covered () by a pickup layer of a second curable compound. The matrix is brought () in contact with the substrate surface and the first curable compound and the second curable compound are cured (). The matrix surface is separated () from the substrate surface, leaving the pickup layer and the first curable compound on the substrate surface. The pickup layer and the first curable compound are thus transferred () together from the matrix surface onto a substrate surface of a substrate sheet. The first curable compound forms printed product micro features at the pickup layer covering the substrate surface.

Method for manufacturing of printed product micro features and arrangement for continuous production of such a product

A method for manufacturing of a tool for production of synthetic image devices comprises cutting () a surface structured plate, giving a respective first and second edge. The plate has geometrical structures&#x2014;microimages or focusing elements&#x2014;in a first surface. Cells comprising the geometrical structures have a predetermined period in a first direction. The first edge is brought () to face the second edge in a close proximity. The first direction of a first area of the plate adjacent to the first edge is positioned with a predetermined angle with respect to the first direction of a second area of the plate adjacent to the second edge. A relative translation in said same plane between the first edge and the second edge is adapted () for bringing a first cell border in the first area to a predetermined distance, relative a corresponding second cell border in the second area. The first and second edges are mutually fixated () and mounted () onto a cylindrical support. A tool for manufacturing of synthetic image devices is also disclosed.

Printing tool for production of synthetic image devices and a method of manufacturing such a tool

The present invention provides a method of producing a product comprising an array of product features () arranged on a surface () of a substrate sheet (), and an arrangement for the production of such products. In this method curable compound () is filled into recesses of a matrix (), pre-cured and then printed onto the substrate sheet (), thereby forming printed product features (). These printed product features () and additional product features () arranged on the opposed side of the substrate sheet () may form image objects and focusing elements, respectively, of a synthetic image device. By way of example a cast cure step can be used to form the additional product features (). Preferably the production of the product is performed in a continuous roll-to-roll process.

Method for printing product features on a substrate sheet

An optical device for providing a synthetic integral image () comprises a polymer foil stack. A first interface of the polymer foil stack comprises optically distinguishable image data bearer structures (A-C) in a first array. A second interface of the polymer foil stack has focusing elements () in a second array. A ratio between distances between neighboring objects in the first array and of focusing elements in the second array in a first direction is different from a ratio between distances between neighboring objects in the first array and of focusing elements in second array in a second direction. This leads to that the synthetic integral image corresponding to the image data bearer structures is perceptible with requested proportions when the polymer foil stack is given a certain curvature. Also polymer foil stacks giving rise to synthetic integral image only when viewed from a very short distance are described. The appearance of the synthetic integral image during bending or moving of the polymer foil stack is used for authentication. A change in apparent image depth during rotation is alternatively used for authentication.

Image foils providing a synthetic integral image

A method for enabling reading of an optical device that has an array of focusing elements and is configured to provide a synthetic image, comprises arranging () of the optical device to obtain a first predetermined shape and controlling () of an image plane selector to select an image plane at a first position relative a surface of the optical device. An observable two-dimensional section of the synthetic image taken at the selected image plane is thereby provided. A device for enabling reading of an optical device is also disclosed.

Optical device reading method and device

The present invention provides a method of producing a two-sided microstructured product and a registration structure that can be used for the method. The method comprises the steps of: () providing primary product features () at a first surface of a substrate sheet (); () providing secondary product features () at an opposed surface; () registering the mutual alignment of the primary and secondary product features () to estimate alignment parameters; and () aligning the provision of primary and secondary product features (). The registration structure comprises a registration-array of focusing elements () at a first surface and a registration-array of reference objects () at an opposed surface aligned with primary and secondary product features () that provides a holographic representation () of the reference objects () in order to estimate the alignment of product features ().

Method of producing a microstructured product

An optical device () for providing a synthetic integral image includes a polymer foil stack (). The polymer foil stack () includes at least one polymer foil (). A first interface () of the polymer foil stack () includes optically distinguishable image data bearer structures (). The first interface () has a general shape defined by a first array () of curved interface portions (), on which the image data bearer structures () are superimposed. Preferably, the optical device () includes a second interface () of the polymer foil stack (), which has a second array () of microlenses (). The second interface () is provided at a distance from the first interface (), which distance is close to a focal length of the microlenses (). The second array () is in registry with the first array ().

Optical device

Methods and devices for angle determination, and retroreflecting foils are presented. A retroreflecting foil () is arranged at a surface, an angle of which is going to be determined. The retroreflecting foil has a lens surface with a plurality of spherical microlenses () and a reflecting surface with a plurality of spherical mirrors () of a second main radius of curvature. The lens surface of the retroreflecting foil is illuminated, and transitions between darkness and light in radiation reflected from the retroreflecting foil, either upon changing a relative angle between the retroreflecting foil and the illuminating light or spatial transitions over the surface of the retroreflecting foil, are observed. An angle measure associated with the transitions is determined. The spherical mirrors present preferably at least one inner point () of a spherical mirror surface at which reflection according to the second main radius of curvature is prohibited.
