A glass article is provided that has sub-surface laser engraving and a prestressing of the surface. A production method for the glass article and the use of the glass article are also provided. The sub-surface laser engraving is arranged in a partial volume of the glass article that is under tensile stress, with tempering of the glass article being performed after the introduction of the sub-surface laser engraving.

A refrigerator shelf is provided that includes a carrier plate and overflow protection. The carrier plate has a top side with a middle region for standing containers, with the overflow protection arranged around the middle region. The overflow protection includes, in a first portion, a hydrophobic layer on the carrier plate and, in a second portion which adjoins the first portion, a frame element.

Between core and cladding, the side-emitting step index fibers have scattering centers that ensure the coupling out of light from the fiber. The side-emitting step index fibers are produced by preforms that contain inlay rods, in which the scattering centers are embedded and which are applied to the outer region of the fiber core during fiber drawing. Alternatively, at least one inlay tube can be used.

A core glass and a fiber-optic light guide made from it and a cladding glass are described. The core glass is in the alkali-zinc-silicate system and contains, in Mol % on an oxide basis: 54.5-65, SiO; 18.5-30, ZnO; 8-20, &#x3a3; alkali metal oxides; 0.5-3, LaO; 2-5, ZrO; 0.02-5, HfO; 2.02-5, &#x3a3; ZrO+HfO; 0.4-6, BaO; 0-6, SrO; 0-2, MgO; 0-2, CaO; 0.4-6, &#x3a3; alkaline earth metal oxides; 0.5-3, LiO, but no more LiO than 25% of the &#x3a3; alkali metal oxides; &#x3e;58.5, &#x3a3; SiO+ZrO+HfO. A molar ratio of NaO/KO is from 1/1.1 to 1/0.3. A molar ratio of ZnO to BaO is greater than 3.5.

Step-index optical waveguides are made of multicomponent glass containing a core glass and an outer glass which entirely surrounds the core class. A fiber-optic cable for conducting electromagnetic radiation, contains at least one bundle of individual fibers which encompass the step-index optical waveguides that are made of multicomponent glass containing a core glass and an outer glass that entirely surrounds the core glass on the circumferential wall thereof. These step-index optical waveguides provide great transmission capacity for transmitting data while keeping the transfer characteristics sufficiently durable. Furthermore, the fiber-optic cable is resistant against physical and chemical environmental influences and be protected against radical ambient chemicals. These aims are achieved by the fact that the outer glass of the step-index optical waveguides is provided with a material composition which is largely free from chemical interactions with the core glass when the fibers are drawn and is chemically inactive towards the plastic jacket.
