The invention relates to an incandescent lamp () which is provided with an illuminant () which is inserted in a bulb () together with a filling in a vacuum-tight manner, the illuminant () comprising a metal carbide that has a melting point above that of tungsten. The bulb also comprises a source and a sink for a material of which the illuminant is depleted during use.

The incandescent lamp, which uses a carbon cycle process, is equipped with a luminous body which, together with a fill, is introduced in a vacuum-tight manner into a bulb, the luminous body including a metal carbide, the melting point of which is above that of tungsten. The distance between the luminous body and the wall of the bulb is less than 18 mm, with a first cycle process, which is attributed to the carbon, being effected by the use of carbon and hydrogen as fill additive, and a second cycle process, which is attributed to the metal, being effected by the use of halogen.

An electric light bulb, in particular a halogen light bulb designed to be operated by mains voltage includes a substantially axially symmetrical bulb and a single-coil filament mounted in the bulb. The filament includes at least one incandescent coil section disposed outside the bulb axis. To reduce heat loading of a luminaire or lamp fixture in which a halogen andescent lamp, retained in a reflector, is installed, the bulb of the halogen incandescent lamp is coated with a heat reflecting or mirror coating so that heat radiated from the filament (3) of the lamp (2, 10) is reflected from the surface of the bulb back into the bulb, rather than being directed from the filament to the reflector so that a portion of the radiation is diffusely transmitted from the lamp through an outer covering (6) thereof. If the reflector is only partially IR reflective, the remaining portion which can pass to heat the fixture or luminaire is small enough so that its temperature rise will be within an acceptable range. Thus, forwardly directed heat radiation is not focused, as is the visible light, and heat loading on an illuminated object is substantially reduced, without excessive heat loading of the fixture or luminaire.

To reduce flicker in low-power, high-pressure discharge lamps, the electrs, in the region in which they face each other, have wrap windings, of about 2 to 4 turns wrapped thereabout and the terminal end of the electrode has an essentially spherical end head element (19, 19', 39) melted thereon, which essentially spherical head element may be a segment of a sphere, ellipsoid-shaped or similarly formed. The electrode shaft, the wrap winding and the sphere preferably are all made of undoped tungsten, although the electrode shaft may be of a lower melting metal, such as rhenium.

A high pressure discharge lamp has a ceramic discharge vessel (8), whose s are closed with plugs (11). The metallic feedthrough, or a main part of it, has a thermal coefficient of expansion which is smaller than the coefficient of the ceramic. The current feedthrough is gas-tightly sintered directly into the plug.

To make a lamp of quartz or hard glass which has a bulb (10, 22) which does ot have an exhaust tip, for example a metal halide high-pressure discharge lamp or a halogen incandescent lamp, the glass bulb is formed by blow-molding the bulb to the desired shape, then retaining an electrode system having electrodes (14, 14a) to be placed in the bulb, current supply leads (12, 24) extending externally of the bulb, and sealing foils (13, 23) connecting the current supply leads to the electrodes in a holder die (11, 25), introducing the electrodes by moving the holder die towards the bulb, flushing the bulb by introducing and selectively removing flushing gas through an open end of the tube, introducing a measured quantity of a fill substance, such as mercury, an iodide or the like, into the bulb through the open end thereof, and then heating the bulb in the region of the position of the sealing foils and pinch-sealing the bulb. Excess glass is then cut off and the bulb can be supplied with a base. To introduce the fill gas and fill substances, the holder die can be formed with a through-opening through which gas exchange can take place and fill substances, for example in form of pellets or pills introduced. The pinch-sealing can be carried out in two steps, one step pinch-sealing the electrode system but leaving capillary openings (62) adjacent the side walls of the tube to permit gas exchange. The capillaries can then be melted shut by a pointed flame.

Method of making an electric lamp, and more particularly a lamp vessel

To protect tungsten electrode shafts (2, 3; 15, 16) extending into the a rtz glass discharge chamber (13, 27) of a high-pressure discharge lamp from attack by metal halides included in the fill to improve the color rendition of the discharge, the electrode shafts (2, 3; 15, 16) are tightly surronded by small tubes (11, 12; 25, 26) of electrically insulating material, which is highly temperature resistant, located in part within the press seal (10; 23, 24) and fitted against the ends of sealing foils (6, 7; 19, 20) which face the discharge chamber. The tube elements extend at least about 0.5 mm beyond the inner ends of the press seal (10; 23, 24) into the discharge chamber (13, 27) and are formed of a material which has a thermal coefficient of expansion which is not lower than that of quartz glass and not higher than that of tungsten.

To eliminate the necessity for supervising the composition of a fill being ntroduced to a halogen incandescent lamp bulb, so that the proportion of halogen containing additive and inert gas will be at a predetermined ratio, by spectroscropic and other similar means, the halogen containing additive (8) is placed, in solid or liquid phase, in a mixing vessel at a temperature (T.sub.1) which is in excess of a temperature (T.sub.2) which is necessary to result in the vapor pressure to enrich the inert gas at the predetermined quantity. The inert gas is conducted into the vessel and thereby excessively enriched. The excessively enriched inert gas is passed through a condenser, the temperature of which is accurately controlled to the temperature (T.sub.2) to thereby condense out the excess halogen additive, so that the mixture then will have the desired relationship of halogen containing additive and inert gas; this mixture is then being filled into the lamp. If the halogen is present in form of a carbon containing compound, or a hydrocarbon compound, it is conducted first over a cracking unit (15), for example quartz granules heated to 900.degree. C., to remove any carbon. Composite fill mixtures of, preferably, the same inert gas such as argon, with different halogen additives, such as bromine or iodine, can be mixed in a blender (17) of constant flow throughput.

To prevent the occurrence of brittle weld junctions upon joining thin intal lead-in wires (3a, 3a') to thicker connecting pin wires (3b, 3b'), an intermediate element of nickel (4) is positioned between the thinner and thicker wire parts, the nickel joining easily with the two parts of the molybdenum wires. The junction molybdenum-nickel-molybdenum, or tungsten-nickel-tungsten in case tungsten wires are used, is preferably located within the region of the press (5) of the lamp (1). In contrast to direct welding of molybdenum to molybdenum, or tungsten to tungsten, the weld does not decay.
