One embodiment of the present invention is a power source for a disk drive to handle an Emergency Power Off event that includes: (a) a storage capacitor; (b) a voltage source that outputs a first voltage that is applied as input to the storage capacitor; (c) a tester, responsive to the first voltage and a reference voltage; and (d) an adjustable voltage source, responsive to the tester output, that outputs a second voltage that is applied as input to the storage capacitor.

One embodiment of the present invention is an apparatus to provide a measure of disk drive head velocity in a disk drive wherein movement is produced by a disk drive motion mechanism that includes a coil, which apparatus includes: (a) a controller that outputs one or more digital signals that are applied as input to a first component, and in response, the first component outputs a reference voltage; (b) a second component, responsive to voltage output across the coil and the reference voltage, outputs a measure of a difference between the coil voltage and the reference voltage; and (c) a third component, responsive to the measure of the difference, outputs a first value if the coil voltage is greater than the reference voltage and a second value if the coil voltage is less than the reference voltage, which third component output is applied as input to the controller; wherein the controller executes a search algorithm that varies the one or more digital signals while observing changes in the third component output to provide a digital estimate of the coil voltage, which estimate provides a measure of the disk drive head velocity.

An improved servo demodulator channel employing a transconductance balanced modulator as a polarity switch, an AGC amplifier and a signal separation circuit. A transconductance balanced modulator comprises two amplification transistors and four output transistors which together form two signal channels, each comprised of an amplification transistor connected in parallel to two output transistors. In a specific embodiment, the transistors are n-p-n transistors, the emitters of the two output transistors associated with a given channel being connected to the collector of the amplification transistor. The transconductance balanced modulator is configured so that the two amplification transistors are interconnected as a differential amplifier, and the base electrode of an output transistor in one signal channel is connected to the base electrode of an output transistor in the other signal channel, the base electrodes of the other two output transistors also being interconnected. Each interconnected pair of base electrodes is connected to a control signal terminal pair. The invention discloses a means whereby a transconductance balanced modulator configured as above-described can be operated as a polarity switch, an AGC amplifier and a signal separation circuit in a servo preamplifier and demodulator chain for use in magnetic disk head positioning systems.

A velocity sensing method and apparatus to be used in conjunction with a linear motor having a moveable voice coil. More particularly, an apparatus is disclosed whereby a velocity sensing loop is positioned on a surface defined by wire windings of a linear motor voice coil. The velocity sensing loop is configured so that an end portion is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the voice coil and two side portions are parallel to the longitudinal axis of the voice coil. As the end portion of the velocity sensing loop traverses a magnetic field with which the voice coil reacts for positioning thereof, a voltage is induced within the velocity sensing loop which is proportional to the velocity of the loop as it passes through the magnetic field. This voltage can be used in conjunction with a feedback loop to control current through, and thus velocity of, the voice coil, thereby providing a means by which velocity of the voice coil can be maintained within predetermined limits during the time that the velocity sensing loop is passing through the magnetic field. The apparatus is believed to be especially useful for head positioning in magnetic disk memory systems by providing a means whereby velocity of the head as it approaches a disk surface can be controlled without use of an external velocity transducer.
