A system and method of controlling operation of an internal combustion engine are provided. The method includes performing a cylinder deactivation operation while running the engine, selecting at least one of the plurality of temperature maintenance actions to increase an exhaust temperature, and performing at least one of the plurality of temperature maintenance actions effective to increase the exhaust temperature. The plurality of temperature maintenance actions may include one or more of a charge air cooler bypass operation, an EGR cooler bypass operation, an aftertreatment system heater operation, a turbocharger bypass operation, a turbocharger geometry adjustment operation, an intake air throttle adjustment operation, and a delayed injection timing operation, or combinations thereof.

Exhaust temperature controls for engine operation with cylinder deactivation

A method for increasing a temperature of an exhaust gas to a target temperature is provided. The method includes determining, by a controller, a target energy of the exhaust gas and determining, by the controller, a target emissions based the target energy. The method further includes determining, by the controller, a tradeoff in a performance of an engine corresponding to one or more of the target emissions, an engine speed, and a driver demand power and determining, by the controller, an allowable heater power based on the tradeoff. The method further includes operating, by the controller, a heater with a heater power command not exceeding the allowable heater power to heat the exhaust gas to the target temperature.

Integration of electric heater into aftertreatment catalyst thermal management

A method and an apparatus including a processing circuit structured to: receive a first signal indicative of an upstream air-fuel equivalence ratio from a first sensor positioned upstream of an intake of a catalyst, the first signal defining a duty cycle, receive a second signal indicative of a downstream air-fuel equivalence ratio from a second sensor positioned downstream of the intake of the catalyst, adjust the duty cycle based at least in part on the second signal, and provide a fault signal in response to the duty cycle not meeting a duty cycle range for a predetermined period of time. A notification circuit is structured to provide a notification indicating that the second sensor is faulty in response to receiving the fault signal.

A method for operating an engine fueling system to manage fuel in an accumulator supplying fuel to an engine including multiple cylinders comprising monitoring fuel load in the accumulator, determining that the engine is operating in a cylinder deactivation mode such as a skip-fire mode during which one or more fueling events to one or more of the cylinders is being skipped, and controlling a supply of fuel from a fuel pump to the accumulator during the cylinder deactivation mode operation. In embodiments, controlling the supply of fuel includes causing fuel to be supplied from the fuel pump to the accumulator if the monitored fuel load is less than or equal to a first fuel load, and causing fuel to be not supplied from the fuel pump to the accumulator if the monitored fuel load is greater than the first load value. Controlling the supply of fuel may comprise controlling the supply of fuel during each fueling event cycle of each deactivated cylinder.

The controller includes a processor and a memory. The memory stores instruction that, when executed by the processor, cause the controller to: receive a power request less than a current power output from the internal combustion engine; command the electric motive device to provide a supplemental power output based on the received power request; command the internal combustion engine to operate in a cylinder deactivation mode whereby at least one cylinder of a plurality of cylinders of the internal combustion engine is deactivated; responsive to determining that a power output of the internal combustion engine is substantially equivalent to the power request after commanding the internal combustion engine to operate in the cylinder deactivation mode, deactivate the electric motive device.

A system and method of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) in an internal combustion engine are provided. The EGR system includes a first EGR flow path and a second EGR flow path independent of the first EGR flow path that are each configured to recirculate high pressure exhaust from the exhaust system back to the engine intake system.
