A drive system includes a prime mover that provides an input, and an output system that is driven by the input. A torque transfer system is coupled between the prime mover and the output system. The torque transfer system includes two gear planes. Each of the gear planes includes a pair of gear meshes, and each of the pair of gear meshes has a floating structure.

Drive system with balanced loads

Systems and methods are provided for pumps that deliver optimized torque characteristics and volumetric efficiency. A system includes a housing defining a surface and a rotor defining a face. A face clearance is defined between the face and the surface. The face clearance is variable in magnitude and determinative of target performance characteristics of the pump system. The housing is made of a material selected to have a thermal expansion characteristic and the rotor is made of a second material selected to have another thermal expansion characteristic. The thermal expansion characteristics deliver the target performance characteristics of the pump system.

Pump system and method for optimized torque requirements and volumetric efficiencies

A vehicle propulsion system includes an oncoming condition sensor that generates an oncoming condition signal, a continuously variable transmission with a variator assembly adapted to transfer torque between a first rotating member and a second rotating member through a flexible continuous device rotatably coupling the first rotating member to the second rotating member, one of the first rotating member and second rotating member including a clamping pulley adapted to controllably adjust a clamping force on the flexible continuous device, and a controller in communication with the oncoming condition sensor and the continuously variable transmission that is programmed to characterize an oncoming condition based upon the oncoming condition signal and to control the clamping pulley to adjust the clamping force based on the characterization of the oncoming condition.

System and method for CVT clamp control based on oncoming conditions in a vehicle propulsion system

A fluid containing component is provided having a structure and a sump for storing a fluid. A gear baffle is disposed between the rotatable component and the structure. The gear baffle includes a first side end and a second side defining a gear cavity therebetween. The fluid displaced by rotation of a gear positioned within the gear baffle collects on inner surfaces of the gear baffle and is directed out of the gear baffle through at least one flow port of the baffle.

A radially stacked planetary gear assembly provides improved lubrication fluid flow to the planet gear bearings of an outer planetary gear set which is especially important when the housing or outer planetary gear carrier is stationary. The assembly includes radially aligned or stacked inner and outer planetary gear sets each having a sun gear, a ring gear and a carrier having planet gears in constant mesh with the sun and ring gears wherein the ring gear of the inner gear set is also the sun gear of the outer gear set and the outer carrier is the assembly housing. The sun gear is disposed on a transmission shaft having lubrication passages which aligns with pluralities of radial openings in a hub housing. A circular plate or guide adjacent one side of the housing includes channels which align with the openings and functions as a lubrication director, channeling lubrication from the transmission shaft and the pluralities of radial openings in the housing hub to the outer bearings, shafts and planet gears.

Stacked planetary gear assembly with improved lubrication

A variator assembly for a CVT or an IVT includes an input shaft that defines an axis of rotation, an input disc rotationally coupled to the input shaft and coaxial with the axis of rotation, and an output disc rotationally coupled to the input disc and coaxial with the axis of rotation. The output disc includes a distal portion having an axial width. A gear is connected to the distal portion of the output disc. The gear has a plurality of gear teeth each having a gear tooth face width that is greater than the axial width of the distal portion of the output disc.

Variator output gearset

Three methods of fabricating an intermediate, center or combination gear for a stacked planetary gear assembly are presented. A first method comprehends forming male splines on the outer surface of the inner (ring) gear and female splines on the inner surface of the outer (sun) gear. The gears are then heat treated and assembled. A second method comprehends broaching internal splines in the outer (sun) gear as well as end milling, broaching or polygon turning face splines on one end of the outer gear and an opposing, adjacent end of the inner (ring) gear. A third method includes fabricating and heat treating the inner and outer gears. A small area of the hardened case is then removed by, for example, machining. The gears are mated, heated rapidly by a pulse of electric current and upset in the heated region.

Methods of fabricating combination gear for stacked planetary gearset

An apparatus and method for finishing the mating surfaces of a gear set or gear train includes at least a first and a second rotatably connected gear element in dynamic, lubricated contact and rotating at different cycle rates. A hardness differential is employed between mating gear surfaces to balance surface damage imparted by friction and plastic deformation. The mating surfaces are of a hardness of at least approximately 70 on the Rockwell superficial hardness scale (70HR-30N), and are subjected to a polishing process, such as isotropic chemical finishing, to shape the surface asperity profile, thereby reducing accumulative damage due to friction and plastic deformation.
