Wax conversion process

In a solvent refining process a naphthenic lubricating oil feedstock is solvent extracted to yield a primary aromatics-lean raffinate and a primary aromatics-rich extract. Polynuclear aromatic content of primary raffinate is controlled by manipulating extraction temperature and solvent dosage. Primary extract is separated (settled) to form a secondary raffinate and a secondary extract. Secondary raffinate is recycled to solvent extraction. The refractive index of secondary raffinate is controlled by manipulating settling temperature and antisolvent dosage. The refractive index of secondary raffinate is maintained at or below the refractive index of feedstock. An improved yield of primary raffinate of a specified polynuclear aromatic content is achieved.

Control method for solvent refining lubricating oils

A lubricating oil stock is extracted with N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone to yield a primary raffinate useful as a high VI lubricating base oil and a primary extract. The primary extract is mixed with antisolvent and chilled to yield a secondary raffinate. This secondary raffinate is sufficiently reduced in aromatics that it is suitable for fluidized catalytic cracking in the absence of hydrogenation.

Solvent extraction of lubricating oils

A lubricating oil stock is extracted with N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone to yield a primary raffinate useful as a high VI lubricating base oil and a primary extract. The primary extract is mixed with antisolvent and chilled to yield a secondary raffinate. This secondary raffinate is sufficiently reduced in aromatics that it is solvent extracted to yield medium to high VI lubricating base oil.

An improvement has been discovered in a process for solvent dewaxing a hydrocarbon lubricating oil stock. Solvent dewaxed oils are steam stripped and then vacuum dehydrated at 2.5 psia at the steam stripping temperature of 350.degree. F. to 450.degree. F. Nitrogen or natural gas having a dew point of -100.degree. F. or lower is contacted with the oil at 0.5 to 1 SCF/bbl. A solvent free lubricating oil is produced which is water haze free in cold storage.

Solvent dewaxing of lubricating oils

A process for dewaxing a petroleum oil stock with a liquid solvent employing direct heat exchange cooling of solvent-oil mixture with an immiscible liquid chilling medium.

Solvent dewaxing process

A solvent refining process utilizing N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone as solvent in which the extract from the solvent extraction zone is cooled to form two immiscible liquid phases, a secondary extract phase and a secondary raffinate phase. The secondary raffinate phase is returned to the extraction zone resulting in increased yield of refined oil product and savings in energy required for the process.

Solvent extraction of hydrocarbon oils

Lubricating oils suitable for use in refrigeration equipment in admixture with fluorinated hydrocarbon refrigerants are produced by solvent extraction of naphthenic lubricating oil base stocks, cooling the resulting extract mixture, optionally with the addition of a solvent modifier, to form a secondary raffinate and a secondary extract, and recovering a dewaxed oil fraction of lowered pour point from the secondary raffinate as a refrigeration oil product. The process of the invention obviates the need for a separate dewaxing operation, such as dewaxing with urea, as conventionally employed for the production of refrigeration oils.

Manufacture of refrigeration oils

An improved process for solvent refining lubricating oil base stocks from petroleum fractions containing both aromatic and non-aromatic constituents utilizing N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone as a selective solvent for aromatic hydrocarbons wherein the refined oil fraction and the extract fraction are freed of final traces of solvent by stripping with gaseous ammonia. The process has several advantages over conventional processes including a savings in energy required for the solvent refining process, and reduced corrosion of the process equipment.

A system controlling the refining unit includes a gravity analyzer, a sulfur analyzer, and viscosity analyzers; all analyzing the light sweet charge oil and providing corresponding signals, sensors sense the flow rates of the charge oil and the MP flowing into the refining tower and the temperature of the extract mix and provide corresponding signals. One of the flow rates of the light sweet charge oil and the MP flow rates is controlled in accordance with the signals from all the analyzers and all the sensors, while the other flow rate of the light sweet charge oil and the MP flow rates is constant.

A system controlling the refining unit includes a gravity analyzer, a sulfur analyzer and viscosity analyzers; all analyzing the heavy sour charge oil and providing corresponding signals, a refractometer samples the charge oil and provides a signal corresponding to the RI, sensors sense the flow rates of the charge oil and the MP flowing into the refining tower and the temperature of the extract mix and provide corresponding signals.
