Method is provided for reducing adverse effects of a link failure in an optical network, wherein the optical network comprises at least one main link which comprises a first optical fiber amplifier (OFA), and along which communications traffic is currently being conveyed, and at least one protection link which comprises a second optical fiber amplifier (OFA) along which communications traffic is not currently being conveyed, wherein the at least one protection link is adapted to carry out communications traffic diverted from the at least one main link when a failure occurs at said at least one main link or at one or more nodes associated therewith, and wherein the method is further characterized in that when no communications traffic is being conveyed along the at least one protection link, one or more pumps of the second OFA is operating to provide an output having a pre-defined power level.

Method of carrying out fast switching in optical communication networks

A reconfigurable wavelength selective dispersion compensation device RWSDCD for selective compensation of dispersion in optical channels having different wavelengths. The RWSDCD comprises a controllable wavelength selective unit WSU having a plurality of local, wavelength related input/output (I/O) ports. The RWDSD also comprises a dispersion compensation cascade comprising at least one chain of successively connected dispersion compensation units DCUs, wherein one or more of the DCUs in the chain are respectively connectable to one or more of the local I/O ports. The RWSDCD outputs one or more of the incoming optical channels upon selectively compensating chromatic dispersion in them, by controllably passing these channels via one or more DCUs of the dispersion compensation cascade.

Technique for selectively changing dispersion in optical communication channels

A reconfigurable optical switching device comprising a Tunable Filters Array (TFA) unit incorporating tunable optical filters, wherein the arrangement is such that one and the same TFA unit is utilized both for performing a drop function of the device in a colorless and reconfigurable manner, and a through function of the device in a reconfigurable manner.

Technology for arranging optical channels in switching optical equipment

A technique is proposed for performing add/drop operations in an OADM assembly serving an optical network and comprising an add unit and a drop unit. With respect to at least one optical channel assigned to an optical wavelength &#x3bb;, the OADM assembly is capable of dropping the channel from the network via the drop unit as a first signal, and adding the channel to the network via the add unit as a second signal. According to the technique, the OADM assembly additionally comprises an authentication and control unit ACU for authenticating the at least one optical channel and controlling the OADM assembly. The ACU is authenticates the optical channel by comparing one or more components of the first signal with one or more components of the second signal serving as a reference, and based on the authentication result, makes decisions whether to allow or block the dropping and/or adding of the optical channel.

Self checking optical add drop multiplexer

Technology is proposed for estimating one or more characteristics of a main signal transmitted via a communication link, wherein the main signal is composed from a number of component signals possibly comprising respective data signals and transmitted via a number of respective communication channels. The technology comprises providing an analyzing circuit independent from the communication link, transmitting a probe data signal in the analyzing circuit, monitoring a bit error rate (BER) parameter associated with the probe data signal and introducing into the analyzing circuit at least a portion of energy of the main signal as an interference signal. The technology allows judging about characteristics of the main signal based on changes in the monitored BER parameter of the probe data signal.
