In some aspects, the disclosure is directed to methods and systems for overlapping orthogonal frequency-division multiple-access (OFDMA) channels for coexistence of devices and legacy devices, including DOCSIS 3.1 mid-split and high-split cable modems (CMs). Described are systems and methods for providing a CMTS with capability for managing overlapping OFDMA channels to support mid-split and high-split CMs, without modification to legacy CMs.

In some aspects, the disclosure is directed to methods and systems for interference mitigation and cancellation in full duplex amplifiers for cable modem or broadband communication systems. In many implementations, an interference canceller in the downstream path may be provided to equalize composite power on the FDX upstream subbands within a predetermined range of amplitude (e.g. X dB) from the desired downstream signal on the same subband, without affecting the downstream subbands.

In some aspects, the disclosure is directed to methods and systems for improving signal to noise ratios of signals from multiple communication links. In some embodiments, a system includes a first frequency transformation circuit configured to transform a first signal in a time domain received from a first device into a corresponding second signal in a frequency domain. The system further includes a second frequency transformation circuit configured to transform a third signal in the time domain received from a second device into a corresponding fourth signal in the frequency domain. The system further includes a leg combining circuit configured to select, for a group of subcarriers, one of the first frequency transformation circuit and the second frequency transformation circuit, and cause, for the group of subcarriers, the selected frequency transformation circuit to output one of the second signal and the fourth signal, according to the selection.

A system and method perform fine ranging on a plurality of cable modems in a network and distribute results. A CMTS grants access to a full duplex ranging probe to the plurality of cable modems, and probe results are distributed to the plurality of cable modems. A receive modulation error ratio (RxMER) uploaded from respective of the plurality of cable modems, and the CMTS identifies an interference group (IG) and bits/symbol for the plurality of cable moderns in a given sub-band. Full duplex operation is then performed in the given sub-band with known IG and bits/symbol.

Full duplex ranging systems and methods

A network architecture includes a gateway that terminates broadband service at a particular location, e.g., at the entry to a house or business. The gateway may execute a MoCA network controller (NC) that manages a network of MoCA nodes connected by cable connections. The gateway distributes content to the MoCA nodes on the network, using a logical star topology over the physical tree topology connections. The NC allocates greater downlink (gateway to MoCA node) bandwidth compared to uplink (node to gateway) bandwidth. Because the gateway terminates the broadband service, the network architecture frees very significant spectrum over the cable connections, permitting, for instance, the transmission of hundreds of Mbps of broadband content streams to the MoCA nodes.

A communication device includes a media access control (MAC) and a physical layer (PHY) processor and supports multi-profile communications with one or more other communication devices. The PHY processor selects a profile based on one or more characteristics of a communication pathway between the device and the one or more other communication devices. A profile may include operational parameters such as modulation coding set (MCS), forward error correction (FEC) and/or error correction code (ECC), a number of bits per symbol per sub-carrier and/or sub-carrier mapping (e.g., such as based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) or orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA)), cyclic prefix, channel(s) used in transmission, bit-filling and shortening, unicast and/or multicast transmission, and/or other operational parameters. The PHY processor also may be configured to operate within at least two different operational modes including a first mode of packet aggregation and a second mode of bit-filling and shortening.

The apparatus and methods relate to a protocol that may be referred to as the Persistent Reservation Request ('p-RR'), which may be viewed as a type of RR (reservation request). p-RR's may reduce latency, on average, to one MAP cycle or less. A p-RR may be used to facilitate Ethernet audiovisual bridging. Apparatus and methods of the invention may be used in connection with coaxial cable based networks that serve as a backbone for a managed network, which may interface with a package switched network.

Apparatus and methods for reduction of transmission delay in a communication network

A PHY auto-negotiation and link up procedure for Ethernet Passive Optical Network Over Coax (EPOC) is provided. The procedure is compliant with the Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) standard and can be used to bring an EPOC network to user traffic readiness. In addition, the procedure, or a variation thereof, can be used to enable periodic maintenance of the coaxial link of the EPOC network, thereby maintaining adequate communication conditions.

In one instance, a home gateway communication device operates to perform such coordination management of a convergent network or convergent digital home network (CDHN). Systems and methods for transmitting packets over a network of communication channels are provide. A system according to the invention may include first and second nodes in communication with a coax backbone. The first node may further include a retransmission buffer. The system may also include a network access coordinator operative to coordinate access of the nodes to the coax backbone. In a time period at least one first packet is transmitted by the first node to the second node. The first packet may include an indication that retransmission service is applied. The first packet may also include a indication of the length corresponding to the packet. If, during the first time period the packet is not received by the second node, the second node is operative to send a retransmission request to the network access coordinator.

Systems and methods for retransmitting packets over a network of communication channels

The present disclosure is directed to a system and method for detecting burst noise. The system and method are described in the exemplary context of a cable modem system and can be used in such a system to specifically detect upstream burst noise. Once detected, the system and method can adjust the upstream receiver that receives data corrupted by the upstream burst noise to reduce the potentially deleterious effects that the burst noise can have on, for example, the packet error rate and/or data rate of the upstream receiver.

A method for assessing channel performance in a network is provided. The network includes a network controller and nodes. The method preferably includes selecting a channel for assessment and allocating a first probe operation for use with the nodes. The method may also include, in response to the allocating, sending a first probe operation report message from each of the nodes to the network controller. The method may further include using the network controller to select a node to be a channel assessment operation node. In addition, the method may include selecting at least a portion of the nodes to participate in a channel assessment operation signal exchange. The method may also include moving the selected nodes to a different channel to perform a channel assessment operation on the different channel and using the channel assessment operation node to allocate a second probe operation on each of the selected nodes.

Embodiments include systems and methods for enabling a physical layer (PHY) link signaling channel between a network termination modem and a cable modem in a cable network. The PHY link signaling channel is embedded within the same multi-carrier channel as the data and enables PHY link up between the network termination modem and cable modern without involvement of higher layers (e.g., MAC). The PHY link signaling channel can be implemented in the downstream (from the network termination modem to the cable modem(s)) or in the upstream from a cable modem to the network termination modem. Embodiments are applicable to any known cable network, and particularly to cable networks implementing the DOCSIS and EPoC standards.
