In one embodiment, a method is provided. In the method of this embodiment, in response, at least in part, to a determination that an idle condition exists, one or more packets may be transmitted to indicate, at least in part, that a transmitter is desired to refrain from transmitting, during one or more predetermined time intervals, to a receiver. Also in the method of this embodiment, also in response, at least in part, to the determination that the idle condition exists, the receiver may be de-activated, at least in part, during the one or more predetermined time intervals. Of course, many alternatives, variations, and modifications are possible without departing from this embodiment.

According to some embodiments, a Gigabit Ethernet link is maintained with a link partner using less than four channels. Embodiments may also establish the Gigabit Ethernet link using four channels, determine that the link is idle, and terminate communication with the link partner over at least one of the four channels.

Network idle protocol with reduced channels

Provided are a method, system, and program for configuring a transmission mode between devices. A connection is established with a link partner at a common transmission speed. A duplex mode is set to a first duplex mode. A transmission error rate is monitored with the link partner and the duplex mode is changed to a second duplex mode in response to detecting that the transmission error rate exceeds a threshold.

According to some embodiments, an Ethernet link speed is determined based on a power-related configuration, and an Ethernet link is negotiated at the link speed. Embodiments may also include determination of whether a power-conserving protocol is enabled, and/or may be implemented by an Ethernet controller.

According to some embodiments, systems and methods may be employed for receiving a power consumption signal. An on-state of a light-emitting diode may be defined. A duty cycle of the light-emitting diode may be determined based at least in part on the power consumption signal. The duty cycle may reduce a power consumed by the light-emitting diode. The determination of the duty cycle may, for example, include varying at least one of an on time or an off time, for the on-state, of the light-emitting diode.
