A thermal management control valve includes a first housing defining a first fluid chamber, a second housing coupled to the first housing and defining a second fluid chamber, a rotary actuator having a drive shaft that defines a drive axis, a cam coupled to the drive shaft and having a cam slot, and a louver plate sealed between the first housing and the second housing and having a plurality of louver slots extending through the louver plate along a louver flow direction. The louver plate is coupled to the cam slot so that rotation of the cam selectively moves the louver plate along a radial direction relative to the drive axis. The radial direction is perpendicular to the louver flow direction.

Systems and method for a cam phaser are provided. In some configurations, the cam phaser includes a drive member having a first mating surface, a driven member having a second mating surface, and a locking mechanism arranged between the first mating surface and the second mating surface. The locking mechanism is operable to contact the first mating surface and the second mating surface, in response to an outside force applied to the driven member that loads the locking mechanism. The cam phaser further includes an engaging member. The engaging member is configured to selectively actuate the locking mechanism to enable rotation of the driven member relative to the drive member. The cam phaser may include a reaction mechanism configured to receive additional force from an input mechanism and selectively transmit the additional force to the driven member to unload the locking mechanism.

A cam phasing system is provided. In some non-limiting examples, the cam phasing system includes a planetary actuator having a first sun gear, a first set of planet gears meshed to and arranged circumferentially around the first sun gear, a first ring gear meshed with the first set of planet gears, and a second sun gear. The second sun gear is rotationally fixed. The planetary actuator further includes a second set of planet gears meshed to and arranged circumferentially around the second sun gear, a second ring gear meshed with the second set of planet gears, and an input shaft rotationally coupled to the first sun gear for rotation therewith. Rotation of the input shaft rotates the first ring gear relative to the second ring gear.

A control system for varying cylinder valve timing of an internal combustion engine is provided. The control system includes a cam phase actuator having first and second actuator ports to adjust a rotational phase of a camshaft relative to a crankshaft, a first control valve, a second control valve, and a dynamic regeneration valve. In one embodiment, the dynamic regeneration valve is configured to enable the cam phase actuator to switch between operating in an oil pressure actuated mode and a cam torque actuated mode when adjusting the rotational phase of the camshaft relative to the crankshaft.
