A method of writing voxels to a substrate using a laser writing system comprises forming a first voxel at a first position in a substrate using a first laser pulse; detecting light emitted or scattered by the substrate as a result of forming the first voxel; determining whether the detected light satisfies a predetermined constraint; and, when the detected light does not satisfy the predetermined constraint, adjusting an amplitude of a second laser pulse. Light emission or scattering from the substrate as a result of forming a voxel is related to the properties of the formed voxel. By monitoring such emission or scattering, it is made possible to compensate for variations in performance of the laser writing system. Also provided herein are a laser writing system and computer program product which implement the method.

Method and system for writing voxels to a transparent substrate

A method for forming birefringent voxels comprises simultaneously generating a first seed pulse and a first data pulse. The first seed pulse and the first data pulse are spatially-separated laser pulses having different amplitudes. The first seed pulse is focused at a first seed location, and the data pulse is focused at a first data location. The first seed location and the first data location are separated by a predetermined distance along a scan path, with the first seed location being ahead of the first data location. Subsequently, a second seed pulse and a second data pulse are generated, and focused at a second seed location and second data location, respectively. The second seed and data locations are separated by the predetermined distance. The second data location is the same as the first seed location, resulting in formation of a birefringent voxel.

Method and system for forming birefringent voxels

A method of writing data to a transparent substrate comprises forming a first voxel by focusing a first laser pulse on a first location in a transparent substrate; and forming a second voxel by focusing a second laser pulse on a second location in the transparent substrate. The first laser pulse and the second laser pulse have different amplitudes, resulting in the first and second voxels having different strengths. Also provided are a system useful for implementing the method; an optical data storage medium obtainable by the method; and a method of reading data from the optical data storage medium.

Phase-modulated optical data storage

A server system comprising processing devices, disks and a storage fabric, all arranged to operate according to a storage fabric protocol in order to communicate between the processing devices and the storage devices over the storage fabric, wherein the storage fabric is settable with a mapping determining which of the processing devices are allocated to use which of the storage devices in providing said services to the client systems. The system comprises a control function arranged to dynamically adapt the mapping in response to either: (i) failure or other downtime of one of the processing devices, storage devices, a component of the storage fabric or a connection in the storage fabric; or (ii) a current demand for the services from the client systems.

Server system

A transparent substrate that encodes data therein having optically readable identification indicia corresponding to identifying information regarding the substrate. The optically readable identification indicia may be readable from the transparent substrate by altering the reflectivity of the transparent substrate in indicia portions that may be read by a scanner or reader (e.g., a barcode reader). The optically readable identification indicia may be provided on a common surface with a data zone in which data is encoded in the transparent substrate. Alternatively or additionally, the optically readable identification indicia may be provided on another, different surface than the surface on which the data is encoded in a data zone.

Glass media unique identification and tracking system

A method of reading from a storage medium to recover a group of information sectors, each comprising a respective information payload. The medium stores redundancy data comprising a plurality of separate redundancy codes for the group, each code being a linear sum of terms, each term in the sum being the information payload from a different respective one of the information sectors in the group weighted by a respective coefficient of a set of coefficients for the redundancy code. The method comprises, after the redundancy data has already been stored on the medium: identifying a set of k' information sectors to be recovered; selecting k&#x2032; of the redundancy codes; determining a square matrix E of the k&#x2032; information sectors by the k&#x2032; sets of coefficients of the selected codes; determining a matrix D being a matrix inverse of E; and recovering the k&#x2032; information payloads from the inverse matrix D.

Encoding for data recovery in storage systems

A server system comprising storage devices, processing devices and a storage fabric all operating according to a storage fabric protocol. The storage fabric comprises a plurality of individual switches having a modular design from which an overall switch is built, and the individual switches have individual respective configuration settings which determine which processing devices are allocated to use which of the storage devices. The system comprises an API enabling a software control function to configure the overall switch. The API is operable to receive from the control function an overall mapping of the storage devices to the processing devices instead of requiring the individual configuration settings of each of the individual switches to be specified by the control function, the API being configured to convert the overall mapping into the individual configuration settings of the individual switches to produce the overall mapping.

A data-storage system comprises a head receiver configured to variably receive up to a number M of write heads. The data-storage system also includes an installed number N of write heads arranged in the head receiver, a substrate receiver configured to receive one or more data-storage substrates, and a positioner machine configured to adjust a relative placement of each of the M write heads with respect to at least one of the one or more data-storage substrates.

Disaggregated data storage and retrieval system

A method to record data in a solid substrate comprises modulating a polarization angle of a coherent optical pulsetrain, and, while the polarization angle is being modulated, focusing the coherent optical pulsetrain on a locus moving through the solid substrate at a relative velocity. Here the relative velocity, a width of the locus in a direction of the relative velocity, and a rate of modulation of the polarization angle are such that the substrate receives within the width of the locus two or more pulses of the optical pulsetrain differing in polarization angle. In this manner, the two or more pulses record, in different portions of the substrate within the width of the locus, two or more different symbols.

High-density optical data recording

An application programming interface (API) supporting server and key based networking is described. In an embodiment, the API receives either a key or a server address from a service running on a server in a direct-connect topology and returns data which identifies suitable next hops for transmission of a packet of data which has a destination of the received server address or of a server address which is encoded within the received key. In another embodiment, the key also encodes information specifying alternative server addresses for use in the event that the original server is unreachable. This information may also be used to define servers for replication of the key. A further embodiment describes a method of queuing packets for transmission against multiple links, where the packet is transmitted on the first available link and at this time is removed from the queues for the other links.

API supporting server and key based networking

Low cost storage for write once read rarely data is described. In an embodiment a storage device comprises a plurality of hard disk drives connected to a server via an interconnect fabric. The storage device comprises a cooling system which is only capable of cooling a first subset of the hard disk drives and a power supply system which is only capable of powering a second subset of the hard disk drives and in some examples, the interconnect fabric may be only capable of providing full bandwidth for a third subset of the hard disk drives. Each subset may comprise only a small fraction of hard disk drives. A control mechanism, which may be implemented in software, is provided which controls which hard disk drives are active at any time in order that the constraints set by the cooling and power supply systems and interconnect fabric are not violated.
