An apparatus and method that form closed-loop system(s) between a downhole system that includes an RSS and a surface control system, to improve stability and performance assurance of the RSS. The apparatus and method account for the actual downhole conditions experienced by the RSS, the actual positioning of the RSS, and historical performance of the surface systems such as the mud pump system, the rotary drive system, and the draw works. These closed-loop systems generate and optimize parameters or target outputs, instructions to surface systems, and instructions for the RSS itself.

Method and apparatus for controlling a rotary steerable system using closed-loop system(s)

A method that includes an electronic application identifying a downlink sequence for execution by a surface control system of a drilling rig, with the sequence including target output values of a mud pump system and/or a drive system. The method includes instructing the control system to operate in accordance with the sequence. The application receives measured output values of the mud pump system and/or the drive system and calculates differences between the target and measured output values. When the differences are within a level of tolerance, then the application identifies the control system as compliant; and when the differences are greater than the level of tolerance, then the application identifies the control system as non-compliant. The method also includes the application receiving data from a BHA of the drilling rig and determining, based on the data received, if a downlink to the BHA was successful.

Method and apparatus for testing and confirming a successful downlink to a rotary steerable system

An apparatus for, and method of identifying a potential problem with a bottom hole assembly ('BHA') combination that is used in a drilling operation. The method includes monitoring, using a sensor, an actual drilling parameter; comparing the actual drilling parameter to a target drilling parameter to determine a deviation; creating, in response to the deviation and by a feedback control loop system that references an electronic database, instructions thereby omitting variability associated with human input in creating the instructions; monitoring, using the controller, a change in the deviation; determining that the change in the deviation is below a threshold; and determining, based on the change in the deviation being below the threshold, that there is a potential problem with the BHA combination. The BHA combination comprises a mud motor and a drill bit.

Method and apparatus for identifying a potential problem with a bottom hole assembly (BHA) combination using a feedback control loop system

A method of transitioning from rotary to slide drilling while maintaining a bit of a bottom hole assembly ('BHA') on a wellbore bottom includes (a) recording a first toolface value of the BHA that is coupled to a drill string; (b) identifying a correlation between the first toolface value and a first quill position of a quill coupled to the drill string; (c) identifying a breakover torque for the drill string; (d) performing rotary drilling; (e) recording a second toolface value while the bit remains on the wellbore bottom; (f) receiving, while the bit remains on the wellbore bottom, a target toolface value; (g) calculating, while the bit remains on the wellbore bottom, an unwind amount to unwind the drill string; and (h) unwinding the drill string by the unwind amount to bring the second toolface value closer to the target toolface value while the bit remains on the bottom.

Method and apparatus for transitioning between rotary drilling and slide drilling while maintaining a bit of a bottom hole assembly on a wellbore bottom

An apparatus and method of operating a drilling system with a directional guidance system and a drilling operation system is described. The directional guidance system and drilling operation system may engage in bi-directional communication during a slide drilling operation. This communication may be continual during the drilling operation. Parameters of the drilling instructions and the drilling operation system may be changed in response to these communications resulting in new instructions and changed slide drilling operations.

An apparatus for, and method of identifying a potential problem with, drilling equipment that is used in a drilling operation. The method includes monitoring an actual drilling parameter associated with the drilling operation; comparing the actual drilling parameter to a target drilling parameter to determine a deviation between the actual and target drilling parameters; creating, using the controller and in response to the deviation, instructions for a control system that controls an aspect of the drilling operation; drilling, using the instructions and the controller, the wellbore; monitoring, using the controller, a change in deviation in response to drilling using the instructions; determining that the change in deviation is below a threshold; and determining, based on the change in deviation being below the threshold, that there is a potential problem with the drilling equipment.

Method and apparatus for identifying a potential problem with drilling equipment using a feedback control loop system

Systems including a plurality of sensors disposed on a bottom hole assembly (BHA) configured to provide data to a controller, wherein a drill bit is connected to a bottom of the BHA; and a controller configured to: receive a well plan; receive, at a first stationary survey station, locational data and directional data of the BHA from the plurality of sensors; create steering instructions based on the well plan, historical drilling data, and the locational and directional data; generate a predicted future position of the drill bit for each of a plurality of stationary survey stations subsequent to the first stationary survey station assuming implementation of the steering instructions; display the predicted future position of the drill bit for each stationary survey station on a graphical user interface; receive directions to implement, reject, or revise the steering instructions; and execute the received directions. Methods and systems for improving confidence in automated steering guidance

A system and method of automating a slide drilling operation comprising a plurality of tasks is described, in particular, reducing stored torque within a drill string that extends within a wellbore that includes storing, using a computing system, a first predetermined workflow to reduce stored torque within the drill string, and a second predetermined workflow to reduce stored torque within the drill string, wherein the first predetermined workflow comprises instructions to vertically move the drill string in first and opposing second directions; and wherein the second predetermined workflow comprises instructions to rotate the drill string in a first direction. Further included are a graphical user interface operably coupled to the computing system, a controller of the computing system receives a selection command selecting the first predetermined workflow or the second predetermined workflow, and a specific parameter is selected and one of the first and second predetermined workflows is automatically executed.

System and method of automating a slide drilling operation

A method, apparatus, and system according to which a drilling engine includes a template having a plurality of data fields outlining operational steps and parameters to perform a drilling process, the data fields having a plurality of recipe settings input therein to facilitate performance of the drilling process. A computer system communicates with the drilling engine and an operational equipment engine, and is configured to send a first control signal, based on the template and the recipe settings, to the operational equipment engine to cause the operational equipment engine to perform the drilling process to drill a first wellbore segment. A sensor engine is configured to monitor a key performance indicator ('KPI') of the operational equipment engine during the performance of the drilling process. In some embodiments, the drilling engine includes a recipe optimization module configured to modify, based on the monitored KPI, at least one of the recipe settings.

Apparatus, systems, and methods for slide drilling optimization based on stand-by-stand performance measurements

Apparatuses, methods, and systems are described herein for automating toolface control of a drilling rig. Such apparatuses, methods, and systems may change operating parameters of the drilling rig responsive to detected toolface orientations. Thus, if a toolface orientation of the drilling tool is determined to be outside an advisory sector, updated operating parameters may be determined and provided to the drilling tool. The updated operating parameters may change at least one of a clockwise rotation target or counterclockwise rotation target of the drilling tool.

Apparatuses, methods, and systems are described herein for automating toolface control of a drilling rig. Such apparatuses, methods, and systems may determine an average drilling resistance function during a rotary drilling segment and, based on the average drilling resistance function during the rotary drilling segment, determine a target set of oscillation values to be used during a slide drilling segment.

A system and method of automating a slide drilling operation comprising a plurality of tasks is described. The method includes presenting, on a GUI, selectable indicators, with each indicator being associated with one task from the plurality of tasks; wherein the GUI is coupled to a controller in communication with drilling equipment, wherein the controller is configured to: receive data from the drilling equipment; and control the drilling equipment using predetermined workflows and task parameters; receiving a selection command associated with: a selectable indicator, a first task, and a first predetermined workflow; presenting on the GUI, in response to the receipt of the selection command, a dialogue box for receiving task parameters associated with the first predetermined workflow; receiving, using the dialogue box, the task parameters; and executing, using the controller and the drilling equipment, the first task using the first predetermined workflow and the first plurality of task parameters.

A drilling rig apparatus is disclosed for improving autodriller control during directional drilling. A BHA determines a relationship between downhole WOB and downhole differential pressure and sends the relationship to a surface controller. The relationships may be sent on a set periodic basis or dynamically in response to the relationships over time differing from each other above a threshold amount. The surface controller estimates downhole WOB by inputting surface differential pressure into a formula implementing the relationship from downhole. The estimated downhole WOB is input into the autodriller for control and is used to estimate MSE. Downhole WOB, either estimated or actual values, may further be used to determine a ratio between downhole WOB and surface-determined WOB values. If the ratio falls below zero in comparison to a prior ratio, then a slack-off rate is adjusted until the ratio reaches zero or a positive value again.

Surface control system adaptive downhole weight on bit/torque on bit estimation and utilization

Apparatuses, methods, and systems include rotary drilling a first segment of a wellbore by rotating a drill string with a top drive forming a part of a drilling rig apparatus for a first period of time; obtaining data from a sensor disposed about the drilling rig apparatus while rotary drilling for at least a part of the first period of time; and based on the data from the sensor, determining a proposed oscillation revolution amount for the drill string to reduce friction of the drill string in the downhole bore without changing the direction of a bottom hole assembly while slide drilling.
