A fitting ring can be provided that is attachable to an edge of a liner for an acetabular shell. The fitting ring can include an alignment portion shaped or configured to engage a lip portion of the acetabular shell as the liner is inserted into the acetabular shell to center the liner and correct any pivoting of the liner relative to the acetabular shell. A driving force can be applied to the liner to drive the liner into the acetabular shell while the fitting ring guides the liner as the liner is inserted into the acetabular shell. Driving the liner into the acetabular shell can also cause the fitting ring to disengage from the liner.

An alignment plate can comprise a body having an exterior-facing surface and an implant-facing surface, at least one adjustable finger extending in a direction transverse to a plane defined by the body, and at least one patient-engaging surface positioned on the at least one adjustable finger. The adjustable finger can be adjustable to vary the distance between the patient-engaging surface and the implant-facing surface. The patient-engaging surface can be configured to engage a portion of a patient to align the alignment plate relative to the patient in a selected orientation. Prosthesis alignment system

An alignment plate can be designed and formed based upon a known geometry of a subject, such as a human patient. The alignment plate can include various members, such as a plurality of fingers or legs, to contact the selected points of the anatomy. Based upon contact of the fingers at the selected points of the anatomy, the alignment plate can be aligned at a preselected or predetermined alignment with a portion of the anatomy, such as an acetabulum.

An acetabular guide system for placing a guide pin near an acetabulum, includes a patient specific acetabular guide including an interior surface and an exterior surface, the exterior surface being configured to have a geometry to register within the acetabulum of a specific patient, a first drill insert configured to be received by the guide at a first location, the first drill insert having a first longitudinal bore configured to be received concentrically in a guide bore of the guide, the guide bore extending exterior to the interior surface, a second drill insert configured to be fixed to a boney portion exterior to the acetabulum at a second location a predetermined distance from the first location, the second drill insert forming a second longitudinal bore, and a selectively removable alignment pin configured to be received by at least one of the first longitudinal bore and the second longitudinal bore.

Method and apparatus for a pin apparatus

Disclosed is a system for engaging and holding a prosthesis both axially and rotationally relative to an inserter assembly. The inserter assembly can engage an acetabular prosthesis in a selected position, such as axially, with a first portion and then or subsequently engage the acetabular prosthesis with a second portion in a rotationally fixed manner. The acetabular prosthesis can then be inserted into a prepared acetabulum according to a disclosed method with the inserter assembly. The inserter assembly can then be removed from the acetabular prosthesis to allow for reduction of a femur.

Disclosed is an acetabular positioning and insertion instrument. Additionally, a method of positioning an acetabular prosthesis with an insertion instrument is disclosed. The positioning instrument can include engaging members to contact an acetabular prosthesis and holding it relative to a portion of the instrument for both rotational and positioning of the prosthesis.

A prosthetic system is disclosed that can have a feature for identifying an aspect of the prosthetic member and related instruments. The identification feature can identify cooperating components of the prosthetic system, such as an implant and instruments for use with the implant.

Disclosed is a system for engaging a prosthesis and for implanting the same. The system can include a component or plurality of components to engage an acetabular prosthesis in both rotational and axial fixation. A method of using the insertion assembly is also disclosed. In addition, a method of assembling, disassembling, and cleaning the insertion assembly is disclosed.

An acetabular shell can include a substrate and a screw hole cover. The substrate can define a screw hole configured to receive a screw to fix the substrate to bone. The screw hole cover is formed separate from the substrate and attached to the substrate to cover the screw hole, and configured to be ruptured.
