A bearing housing assembly includes a bearing housing and a bearing assembly. The housing extends along an axis and has a cross-bore surface defining a cross-bore to receive lubricant and a feed groove surface defining a feed groove. The feed groove surface has a constant radial portion extending circumferentially about a majority of the axis with a first groove radius that is constant and an expanded radial portion extending from the constant radial portion circumferentially about the axis with a second groove radius larger than the first groove radius. The bearing housing also has an interior surface having an interior radius smaller than the first groove radius and defining an interior. The bearing assembly is disposed in the interior and includes an outer race having a receiving groove surface defining a receiving groove, an inner race, and a rolling element disposed between the outer race and the inner race.

A variable turbine geometry assembly includes an adjustment ring extending along and rotatable about an axis, at least one vane lever coupled to the adjustment ring, and at least one vane coupled to the at least one vane lever. The variable turbine geometry assembly also includes a biasing member coupled to the adjustment ring at a first circumferential location on the adjustment ring and coupled to the adjustment ring at a second circumferential location on the adjustment ring. The biasing member extends from the first circumferential location to the second circumferential location. The biasing member is operably in contact with the at least one vane lever between the first circumferential location and the second circumferential location to bias the at least one vane lever toward the adjustment ring and to reduce vibration between the adjustment ring and the at least one vane lever.

Variable turbine geometry assembly

A turbocharger includes a shaft extending between first and second shaft ends. A turbine wheel is coupled to the first shaft end, and a bearing housing defines a bearing housing interior and is disposed about the shaft. A turbine housing defines a turbine housing interior and is disposed about the turbine wheel. A sealing assembly includes a case disposed about the shaft and extending between a first case end proximate to the turbine wheel and a second case end distal from the turbine wheel. The sealing assembly also includes a ring disposed between the shaft and the case such that the ring is unobstructed by the case radially between the shaft and the ring. The sealing assembly further includes a deformable component coupled to the second case end and to the ring, and is moveable with the ring to seal the bearing housing interior and the turbine housing interior.

A method for enclosing a rotating assembly of a turbocharger including providing at least two bearing housing segments which together form a bearing housing including a bearing bore and an insert bore. The method can include machining complementary mating faces of the segments, machining features as required for alignment and fastening of the segments to each other, machining the bearing bore and the insert bore, and machining oil feed passages and oil drain features into at least one segment. The at least one oil feed bore is drilled from the radially inner surface of the corresponding bearing housing segment. The method can further include balancing a rotating assembly, installing the rotating assembly into one of the bearing housing segments, and joining the segments together to enclose the rotating assembly.

Multi-segment turbocharger bearing housing and methods therefor

A variable turbine geometry (VTG) turbocharger is disclosed. The VTG turbocharger may comprise a turbine section having a turbine wheel and plurality of guide vanes configured to regulate a flow of exhaust gases to the turbine wheel. The VTG turbocharger may further comprise an actuation pivot shaft (APS) configured to mediate actuation of opening and closing of the guide vanes, a bushing rotatably supporting the APS with a clearance therebetween, and a radial seal circumscribing the APS and inserted in a cavity of the bushing. The radial seal may form an interference fit with both an outer diameter of the APS and an inner diameter of the bushing to seal a leakage of the exhaust gases between the clearance between the APS and the bushing.

To solve both axial and rotational constraint problems in turbochargers with rolling element bearings (REBs), a REB sleeve or outer race is mounted to the bearing housing in a way that is not axially and radially rigid, thus allowing for oil damping films both radially and axially. At the same time, the REB sleeve or outer race is held so that the REB sleeve or outer race does not rotate relative to the bearing housing. This dual purpose is achieved using an anti-rotation ring and a damping ring. The anti-rotation ring includes at least one anti-rotation feature for engaging the bearing housing and at least one anti-rotation feature for engaging the REB cartridge, preventing rotation of the REB cartridge sleeve or outer race. The damping ring axially locates the REB cartridge and dampens axial movement and cushions axial thrust.

An electrically assisted turbocharger () comprising a housing () and an electric motor stator () disposed in the housing (). The stator () includes a pair of o-rings, or other circumferential seals (), disposed therearound. The o-rings () are operative to seal against an interior of the housing () to form an annular chamber () around at least a portion of the stator () and a pair of end cavities () at the axial ends of the stator (). The annular chamber () is adapted to allow the circulation of a cooling fluid around the stator (). A pair of bearings () may be disposed in the housing (), one on each side of the stator (). A shaft () is supported in the housing () by the bearings (). The shaft () in turn supports a turbine wheel () and a compressor wheel. An electric motor rotor () is disposed on the shaft () between the bearings () and inside the stator ().

At the same time, the REB cartridge is held both axially and rotationally, so that the outer race does not rotate relative to the bearing housing. This dual purpose is achieved using a special dual-mode sliding clip with at least one anti-rotation feature for engaging the bearing housing and at least one anti-rotation feature for engaging the REB cartridge, thereby axially locating the REB cartridge and preventing rotation of the outer race.

To solve heat soak and reduced heat rejection capability problems in turbochargers with rolling element bearings (REBs), the REB cartridge is mounted to the bearing housing in a way that is not rigid, thus allows for an oil damping film, but, at the same time, the REB cartridge is held both axially, to transfer thrust loads to the bearing housing, and rotationally, so that the REB cartridge does not rotate relative to the bearing housing, using male or female features in the REB and corresponding female or male features associated with the bearing bore or the turbine face of the bearing housing closure.

A turbocharger using a high speed rolling element bearing system is improved in desired speed and life by providing an insulating spacer, with a thermal conductivity lower than that of the material in the inner race of the REB, between the turbine-end of the inner race of the bearing system and the compressor-end face of the piston ring boss to impede the flow of heat from the turbine wheel to the inner race of the rolling element bearing.

A turbocharger uses a high speed rolling element bearing system. An exemplary rolling element bearing system includes a polymer sleeve to impede the flow of heat from the bearing housing into the outer race of the rolling element bearing system. In a second embodiment of the invention, the sleeve is supported by an oil film. In a third embodiment of the invention, the bearing cartridge is damped by a damping medium which also connects the bearing cartridge to the bearing housing.

A connection device for connecting two turbine housings () of a two-stage turbocharging system includes a male/female joint for joining the two turbine housings; a cylindrical ring seal () installed under compression inside the male/female joint for sealing exhaust gas; and a vibration damper () in a shape of a flat washer and placed between the two housings. The cylindrical ring seal can be made of stainless steel mesh impregnated with vermiculite or graphite. The vibration damper can be made of stainless steel mesh but not impregnated.
