Coating compositions which are capable of curing at room temperature comprise (i) a condensation polymer in which the polymer backbone contains at least one grouping of the formula --CO--C(R).dbd.C(R)--CO--, where R is hydrogen, a halogen or an alkyl or aryl group, and (ii) a compound carrying at least three primary amine or thiol groups. The compositions are of particular interest as undercoats in the automobile refinish trade.

Coating compositions capable of curing at or near to room temperature comprise 90-50% by weight of a specified hydroxyl group-containing addition polymer, 10-50% by weight of an alkylated melamine-formaldehyde crosslinking agent and an acid catalyst consisting of a blend of a C.sub.1-4 alkylated arylsulphonic acid and a C.sub.8-14 alkylated arylsulphonic acid in amounts such that the --SO.sub.3 H group content is 0.70-2.1% of the total weight of the addition polymer and the crosslinking agent. Crosslinked addition polymer microparticles are produced by dispersion polymerization of monomers in an aliphatic hydrocarbon liquid in the presence of a dispersion stabilizer and also of a specified type of amino resin which is insoluble in the hydrocarbon liquid, at least one of the monomers polymerized carrying a group which can react with the amino resin under the conditions of polymerization. Coating compositions having improved application characteristics and/or giving improved film properties are obtained by dispersing the microparticles in combinations of suitable film-forming polymers and diluents.

A dispersion of a condensation polymer in an organic liquid medium in which the polymer is insoluble is prepared by heating in the liquid medium one or more appropriate reactants one of which is present in the liquid disperse phase of an emulsion of which the continuous phase is constituted by the said liquid medium, in the presence dissolved in the liquid medium of a single-chain polymeric material of molecular weight between 1000 and 20,000 which carries at least one reactive group capable of taking part in the condensation polymer-forming reaction.
