A composition intended to be employed for therapeutic purposes incorporates nicotine and at least one other nicotinic compound. Representative forms of nicotine can be as a free base (e.g., as a mixture of nicotine and microcrystalline cellulose), as a form of nicotine salt (e.g., as nicotine bitartrate) or as nicotine polacrilex. The other nicotinic compound is a compound that can be considered to bind selectively to certain nicotinic receptor subtypes, and particularly those of the central nervous system. For example, the other nicotinic compound can be a compound that binds selectively to the nicotinic receptor subtypes &#x3b1;or &#x3b1;&#x3b2;. The composition is useful for treatment of central nervous system conditions, diseases and disorders, and as a nicotine replacement therapy.

Nicotine-containing pharmaceutical compositions

A composition intended to be employed for therapeutic purposes incorporates an active ingredient (e.g., a source of nicotine) and at a non-active ingredient that is carried by a porous substrate. The non-active ingredient can be a substance that has the capability of affecting the pH of the biological system to which it is applied (e.g., basic substance and/or buffering agent is sorbed onto the porous carrier, so as to be in intimate contact with that carrier). Representative forms of nicotine include free base (e.g., as a mixture of nicotine and microcrystalline cellulose), a nicotine salt (e.g., as nicotine bitartrate) and nicotine polacrilex. The basic substance can be sodium carbonate, and the porous substrate can be microcrystalline cellulose. The composition is useful for treatment of central nervous system conditions, diseases, and disorders, and can be used as a nicotine replacement therapy.

The system incorporates a tobacco curing barn or other type of curing enclosure, such as bulk curing barn used for the flue-curing of tobacco. The curing barn is equipped with at least one reclamation element configured to condense and collect moisture released from tobacco cured within the barn. The reclamation element is disposed in proximity with the enclosure in a manner and location providing passage of moist air released from the tobacco across a surface of the reclamation element. The system also includes at least one storage container disposed in fluid communication with the reclamation element surface and configured to store moisture and moisture-borne material collected by the reclamation element. The resulting tobacco-derived components can be blended with other tobacco materials, such as is common practice during tobacco reordering.

The lighting end or tip of the smoking article is configured in such a manner that the entire front or upstream face thereof does not lie in a plane that is generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the smoking article. For example, at least a portion of the front face of the smoking article lies in a plane (e.g., a generally flat plane) that is positioned about 40&#xb0; to about 50&#xb0; relative to the longitudinal axis of that smoking article. As such, the overall nature or character of the mainstream aerosol generated by a smoking article can be altered. An apparatus and method for manufacturing small quantities of cigarettes provides for such manufacture in a substantially simultaneous fashion while maintaining consistent quality between the cigarettes. The apparatus and method provide for delivering at least one charge of tobacco filler from a supply of tobacco filler onto a predetermined length of wrapping paper in a garniture. The wrapping paper can be formed about the charge of tobacco filler by a forming mechanism in the garniture to form a cigarette rod having a finite length. The formed cigarette rod can then be transferred to a cutting device where, in a separate step, the cigarette rod can be cut into a plurality of individual cigarettes. The cigarettes may have filter elements attached, and may be packaged for a consumer. The filter element and tipping paper can provide for air dilution of the cigarettes.
