The techniques provide a system and a method of producing polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) polymer. The PPS polymer is produced by reacting a sulfur source and a dihaloaromatic compound in the presence of a polar organic compound in a polymerization mixture in a polymerization vessel. The PPS polymer is washed with a base to lower the oligomer content of the PPS polymer and thus the off-gassing during processing.

System and method for reducing off-gassing of polyphenylene sulfide

Disclosed herein is a process for preparing cured arylene sulfide polymers. A first curing vessel comprising a first agitator is used to cure a poly(arylene sulfide) compacted powder. The curing proceeds until the compacted powder reaches a melt flow rate within a target range. When the melt flow rate of the compacted powder first reaches the target range, the power consumption of the first agitator is determined. A second curing vessel comprising a second agitator is charged with a second quantity of the compacted poly(arylene sulfide) powder. The second quantity of compacted powder is cured in the second vessel until the power consumption of the second agitator reaches the value at which the melt flow rate in the first curing vessel first reached the target range.

Method of measuring extent of curing of compacted poly(arylene sulfide)

A process is provided for curing poly(arylene sulfide) polymers by achieving and maintaining curing conditions in a cure vessel, then intermittently adding uncured polymer to said cure vessel and intermittently removing polymer from the cure vessel wherein the removal of polymer from the cure vessel is performed at intervals such that the presence of uncured polymer is minimized or avoided.

A process is provided to recover at least one modifier compound and at least one polar organic compound from a reaction mixture comprising high molecular weight Poly(arylene sulfide) product, low molecular weight P(AS), cyclic and linear P(AS) oligomers, at least one POC, at least one modifier, an alkali metal halide by-product, and water.

Process for producing poly(arylene sulfide)

A process is provided for making a composition said process comprising mixing about 60% by weight to about 90% by weight of a first P(AS) having a melt flow index of about 120 grams/10 minutes or more and about 10% by weight to about 40% by weight of a second P(AS) having a melt flow index of about 110 grams/10 minutes or less. In another embodiment of this invention, said composition and manufactures produced from said composition are provided.

A thermosettable composition suitable for preparing reinforced plastic articles is prepared by combining an unsaturated polyester, a rubber, a vinyl monomer, a catalyst and a calcium carbonate filler coated with a fatty acid or fatty acid metal salt. The resulting compositions when cured exhibits high impact strength.

A mixture of a carboxylic acid and an alkali metal carboxylate-containing rubber in a vinyl monomer is provided. The resulting composition has a relatively low viscosity and is particularly adapted for preparing a thermosettable composition suitable for preparing reinforced plastic articles by combining an unsaturated polyester, the alkali metal carboxylate-containing rubber solution containing the carboxylic acid, a catalyst, and a reinforcing agent. The resulting composition when cured exhibits high impact strength and good surface finish.

A thermosettable composition suitable for preparing reinforced plastic articles is prepared by combining an unsaturated polyester, a normally solid carboxy-containing polymer of a conjugated diene, a vinyl monomer, a catalyst and a reinforcing agent or filler. Preferably the composition is prepared utilizing a mixer giving moderate shear such as a twin-rotor mixer. The resulting composition when cured exhibits high impact strength and good surface finish.
