A novel laminate useful for seals particularly for vehicle window seals that are flexible, wear resistant and have a low coefficient of friction, is provided. The laminate comprises a rubber substrate and a polyolefin coating disposed on and adherent to the rubber substrate. The invention also provides novel methods of making laminates, particularly seals. Such method comprises the following steps: providing a rubber substrate; then applying a powdered crystalline polyolefin to the rubber substrate, in an amount sufficient to form a continuous layer when melted; and then melting the powdered crystalline polyolefin to form a continuous polyolefin coating disposed on, and adherent to, the rubber substrate. The invention also relates to seals comprising: an polyolefin rubber body; and a continuous coating of fused polyolefin disposed on and adherent to the rubber seal. Preferably the continuous coating of fused polyolefin is disposed in the glass run channel in the rubber body.

Method of coating rubber with solventless crystalline polyolefin coatings

The disclosure relates to a process for improving the processability, storage stability and/or cure rate of an uncured silica reinforced rubber composition where silica comprises the major filler in the reinforced rubber composition, which comprises combining a mixture comprising, rubber, silica and at least one organic compound having a low molecular weight and a functional group wherein said functional group is at least an epoxy group, such as an epoxy/ether, epoxy/hydroxyl, epoxy/ester, epoxy/amine, ether/amine, episulfide, episulfide/ether, episulfide/hydroxyl, episulfide/ester functional group located in a terminal or sterically unhindered position in the molecule of said organic compound where the molecular weight of said organic compound having a low molecular weight is less than 7,000, or the organic compound comprises an abietyl, styrenated resorcinol formaldehyde, or ester hydroxyl organic compound having a hydroxyl, ester, and optionally, an ether group, such as an ester diol.

Silica reinforced rubber compositions of improved processability and storage stability

A laminate useful for seals particularly for vehicle window seals that are flexible, wear resistant and have a low coefficient of friction, is provided. Methods of coating rubber with solventless crystalline polyolefin coatings

A process for forming a thermoplastic vulcanizate compromising the steps of dynamically vulcanizing a rubber within a blend that comprises the rubber and a thermoplastic polymer, where said step of vulcanizing is carried out by using a phenolic resin in the presence of a catalyst system formed by combining a metal halide and a metal carboxylate. Also, a thermoplastic vulcanizate having low moisture pick-up with a technologically useful cure.

Thermoplastic vulcanizates and process for making the same

An improved mouse cleaning apparatus having a cleaning ball for temporary insertion into the cavity formed on the underside of the mouse. In one embodiment, the cleaning ball includes a core which is encased within an outer shell of polymeric material such as a foamed rubber compound. This core may be metallic, polymeric, or made of another sufficiently dense material, and is provided to ensure that the cleaning ball is sufficiently heavy to properly roll in response to movement of the mouse across a mouse pad or the like. The core may alternatively be covered with absorbent fibers, which may be synthetic or organic in nature, rather than a polymeric coating. In another embodiment, the cleaning ball is made entirely of a polymeric or elastomeric material having sufficiently high weight and/or density or is sufficiently compressed such that a weighted core is not required. The apparatus further comprises a mouse cleaning pad to provide a suitable planar surface upon which to roll the mouse during cleaning operations. The upper surface of the mouse pad is preferably textured to provide a surface having a relatively high coefficient of friction for the cleaning ball. An improved cleaning method, and various methods for manufacturing mouse cleaning balls are also described.

A thermoplastic vulcanizate prepared by dynamically vulcanizing a rubber within a blend that comprises the rubber, a fluorine containing thermoplastic, and a vulcanizing agent; wherein the rubber is selected from nitrile rubber, hydrogenated nitrile rubber, amino-functionalized nitrile rubber, acrylonitrile-isoprene rubber, and mixtures thereof.

Thermoplastic compositions containing elastomers and fluorine containing

A vulcanizable elastomer having at least one pendant reactive amino group. The elastomer is vulcanized by using a phenolic-resin curative essentially in the absence of an activation catalyst, to form a vulcanizate. Also provided is a thermoplastic elastomeric vulcanizable composition of matter, employing the elastomer having the pendent reactive amino group, which may be dynamically vulcanized without the use of an activation catalyst. Further provided is a method for vulcanizing an elastomer having at least one pendent reactive amino group by utilizing a phenolic vulcanizing agent without the use of a catalyst.

A method of recycling vulcanized rubber comprising the steps of grinding vulcanized rubber into particles having an average diameter in the range from about 50 .mu.m to about 1.2 mm, and adding the ground tire rubber to a low-modulus binder to form a thermoplastic rubbery composition comprising from about 10 to about 80 parts by weight of the low-modulus binder including from about 25 to about 75 parts by weight of a crystalline polyolefin resin, and from about 25 to about 75 parts by weight of a binder rubber, wherein the rubber is vulcanized by dynamic vulcanization to form fine particles the binder resin, and from about 90 to about 20 parts by weight of ground vulcanized rubber wherein said step of adding the ground rubber occurs at a temperature above the melting point of the crystalline polyolefin resin.

Thermoplastic rubbery compositions

Vulcanizable rubber compositions are disclosed which contain co-activator of vulcanization which is a polymeric amine, that is, a hydrocarbon polymer with pendent alkyl amine groups. The co-activators impart increased rates of vulcanization with little decrease in scorch delay and very little increase in the modulus of the cured compositions. No increase in heat build-up or decrease in flex-fatigue life is shown. Typical polymers forming the backbone of the co-activators include EPDM rubber and polymers from butadiene or isoprene, with optional co-monomers.

Rubber compositions comprising a polymeric amine co-activator

Butadiene polymer rubber compositions containing a polymeric activator have particularly beneficial characteristics. The activator is an interpolymer of 2-vinylpyridine monomer and 1,3-butadiene monomer, optionally with styrene, which interpolymer contains from 20% to 65% by weight of vinylpyridine units, and is mostly insoluble in boiling tetrahydrofuran.

Vulicanizable synthetic rubber compositions cure-activated by

Butadiene polymer rubber compositions containing a polymeric activator have particularly beneficial characteristics. The activator is an interpolymer of a vinylpyridine monomer and a diene hydrocarbon monomer which interpolymer contains from 20% to 65% by weight of vinylpyridine units. Composite articles made from these rubber compositions together with contiguous portions of a dissimilar rubber compound show greater strength and adhesion as a result of the presence of a activator in the butadiene polymer rubber composition.

Compositions of acrylic rubber and another rubber which can be nitrile rubber, hydrogenated nitrile rubber, fluoroelastomer, silicone rubber, or fluorosilicone rubber are described, in which the acrylic rubber is at least partially crosslinked. The compositions are millable and processable and, by the addition of curatives for the nitrile rubber, hydrogenated nitrile rubber, fluoroelastomer, silicone rubber, or fluorosilicone rubber, can be further crosslinked to become vulcanizates which exhibit excellent resistance to the effects of hot air, hot oil, and ozone.
