A disposable filter device having a plastic housing with inlet and outlet chambers separated by a filter disc sealed within the housing, the housing being readily disassemblable after use to remove the filter disc for identification or analysis of the material filtered from the fluid.

Filter device

The disposable filter device of the invention is particularly suited for testing for the amounts of tars and nicotine in cigarettes and comprises a housing having two components (2,4) one of which has a cylindrical portion (8) and the other of which has an annular flange (48) whereby the two members can be telescoped together with a filter disc (6) therebetween for collecting the tars and nicotine. The member with the cylindrical portion is formed of a relatively soft resilient substantially non-hygroscopic polymer and the member with the annular flange is formed of a relatively hard substantially non-hygroscopic polymer. The resiliency of the member with the cylindrical portion in combination with the relative hardnesses of the members and the particular shapes of the telescoped portions (12,48) enables the two members to be removably secured together with an excellent seal therebetween. Because both members are of substantially non-hygroscopic polymers, the device is substantially free of moisture absorption and hence free of inaccuracies, due to moisture absorption, in determining the amounts of tar and nicotine collected.

A filter for intravenous solutions including a flat, rectangular housing formed of two pieces sandwiching a filter sheet diagonally from end to end with support ribs on one side of the sheet and luer connections in the large end of each piece of the housing.

A disposable testing chamber for cigarettes which includes a thin, sheet-like transparent housing element for retaining a filter disc with a conical closure element having a press-fit into the housing to seal the disc and become self-retaining in the housing, each element having a peripheral, annular wall portion in a plane normal to the axis of the chamber to register with and lie adjacent to the periphery of the filter disc.

In accordance with the invention there is provided a water filter and water filter cartridge having an upper water filtering layer containing charcoal particles, a lower filtering layer having a submicron pore size and an intermediate filtering layer having a pore size greater than that of the lower layer but less than the particle size of the charcoal in the upper layer.

Water filter device

In accordance with the invention there is provided a water filtering device for attachment to a faucet comprising a generally tubular passage with an inlet for water from the faucet at its upper end and an outlet for water at the lower end, an annular water filtering chamber surrounding the passage, openings between the lower axial end of said chamber and the lower portion of said passage, openings between the upper axial end of said chamber and the upper portion of said passage, and a valve in said passage movable for blocking the flow of water directly from the upper portion of said passage to the lower portion of said passage whereby when said valve is closed water from the faucet is caused to flow from said passage into and through said filtering chamber and then back into said passage and out of the water outlet. Further in accordance with the invention there is provided a filter for the filter chamber, the filter having an arrangement of filtering layers which provides highly pure water while at the same time providing extended useful filter life.
