In a method of forming an airbag, first and second main panels for constituting an airbag, and first and second inner panels in a form of a strip are prepared. The first and second inner panels are sewed together along longitudinal directions thereof without interposing a material therebetween, and an adhesive is provided at edge portions of the first and second main panels. The first and second inner panels sewed together are disposed between the edge portions of the first and second main panels so that the first and second main panels are directly joined together along the peripheries of the first and second main panels by the adhesive. The first and second inner panels sewed together are directly joined to the first and second main panels by the adhesive, respectively.

Method of forming airbag with gas preventing joining portion

An airbag device which is easily aligned in an instrument panel and which includes a lid that does not lift from the instrument panel. The airbag device includes a retainer, an airbag folded and accommodated in the retainer, a lid for covering the opening of the retainer, and an inflator for deploying the airbag. The device includes a belt wrapped around the outside of the retainer. The ends of the belt are connected to the lid. The edge of the opening of the instrument panel includes two steps. The first step supports the edge of the lid and the second step supports a spacer. The belt has an elastically deformable portion that stretches to ensure that the belt remains in elastic contact with the bottom of the retainer.

An airbag is formed of first and second main panels joined together at a joining portion to form a chamber, a first inner panel bonded to the first main panel, and a second inner panel bonded to the second main panel. The first and second inner panels are interposed between the first and second main panels, and are joined to each other at a position away from the joining portion of the first and second main panels. The airbag can securely prevent gas leakage at the joining portion of the first and second panels.

A lightweight air bag apparatus which facilitates the positioning between an instrument panel and a lid, and to provide an air bag apparatus in which the lid is not attached to a retainer in substance. The air bag apparatus includes a retainer, an air bag which is folded and stored in the retainer, a lid which covers the open surface of the retainer, and an inflator (gas generator) for expanding the air bag. The external surfaces of the retainer are surrounded by belts, and both ends of the belts are fixed to the leg portions and with rivets, bolts, or other fittings. The peripheral portion around an opening formed in the instrument panel is clamped between the edge portion of the lid and the extending portions. The belts are not connected to the retainer.

To improve the strength in the connection between an inflator and an airbag, an area around a gas inlet,of an airbag,is fitted onto an inflator,and is bound tightly by two bands,The areas of the airbag,near the bands,are provided with stitches,extending in the circumferential direction of the inflator,The stitches,rise from the outer surface of the airbag,The areas around the gas inlet of the airbag,and the inflator,are held by saddle bands,of a holder,The stitches,are caught by the bands,when the airbag,is inflated and the airbag,is about to be slipped off, thereby securely preventing the detachment of the airbag
