New compounds and their mixtures enable the formation of the ferroelectric nematic liquid crystalline phase at ambient temperature. Compounds of the formula I are presented, in which the variable groups have the meanings indicated in claim. Liquid crystal media comprise at least one compound of the formula I.

Liquid crystal compounds

The new media exhibit a ferroelectric nematic phase preferably at ambient temperature. They preferably comprise one or more compounds selected from the group of compounds of formulae IA, IB and IC, in which the variable groups have the meanings indicated in the text and in the claims. Use of the media for providing ferroelectric nematic materials and a method of operation of an electro-optical device are presented. The media may be useful for energy-saving displays and electrical appliances.

Liquid crystalline medium and electro-optical device

The invention relates to a liquid-crystalline medium having a nematic phase comprising one or more compounds of formula X wherein the parameters have the meaning given in the text, to the use thereof in an electro-optical display, particularly in an active-matrix display based on the IPS or FFS effect, to displays of this type which contain a liquid-crystalline medium of this type and to the use of the compounds of formula X for improvement of the transmission and/or response times of a liquid-crystalline medium which comprises one or more additional mesogenic compounds, as well as to the compounds of formula X.
