The optical writing device includes: a thinning unit that thins pixels in input binary image data depending on a pattern of the image data; a thinning rate setting unit that sets a thinning rate by the thinning unit for each predetermined range of the image data; and a light-emitting time changing unit that changes a light-emitting time of the light-emitting element array for each predetermined range of the binary image data thinned by the thinning unit depending on the thinning rate set by the thinning rate setting unit and a set toner saving rate.

Because the dynamic range of a solid-state image sensor is relatively narrow, it is necessary to reduce the amount of light using an aperture so that the amount of light incident on the solid-state image sensor is within the range of the dynamic range. Failsafe toroidal continuously variable transmission

A toroidal continuous variable transmission is disclosed in which no power is transmitted to toroidal speed changers during the engagement of a direct clutch. The toroidal continuous variable transmission is constructed such that the engagement of the direct clutch causes an input shaft to connect drivingly with an output shaft through a planetary gear system whereby the power may be transmitted from the input shaft to the output shaft. The release of the forward clutch makes reverse means freewheeling so that no load is applied to output disks. As a result, none of the input disks are subjected to the thrust force at the loading cam, regardless of the rotation of the input shaft. Therefore, although the toroidal speed changers may make only the idling in unison with the input shaft, none of the input disks are forcibly urged against the power rollers.

Toroidal continuous variable transmission

In a driving apparatus for a four-wheel drive vehicle in accordance with the present invention, a multiple disc clutch is incorporated between a front wheel driving system and a rear wheel driving system, a hydraulic chamber is formed in a fixed casing supporting rotatably a front differential case in the front wheel driving system and a clutch piston is disposed in the hydraulic chamber. Bearings are disposed between the clutch piston and the front differential case in order to enable them to rotate relatively. Hydraulic pressure generated from hydraulic pressure generation means disposed outside each driving system is caused to act on the clutch piston so that the multiple disc clutch is operated by the press force of the clutch piston through the front differential case and the differential operation of the front and rear wheel is restricted in accordance with the operation force of the multiple disc clutch. Accordingly, the size in the radial direction can be reduced in the axial direction of the apparatus itself, and even if there is any limitation to the space, a large hydraulic pressure is permitted to act on the muliple disc clutch by forming only the small hydraulic chamber described above.
