Color coating composition

Multilayer metallic coating is formed on a substrate by applying a base coating composition containing a metallic pigment, applying a clear top coating composition on the base coating wet-on-wet, and curing both coatings simultaneously. The coating compositions contain a film-forming polymer having a plurality of crosslinkable function groups, a crosslinker an organic liquid diluent, internally crosslinked polymer microparticles and an organic acid catalyst masked with an organic base capable of accelerating the crosslinking reaction between the film-forming polymer and the crosslinker.

Method of forming metallic coatings

A clear top coat composition comprising a film-forming acrylic polymer having a plurality of cross-linkable functional groups, a volatile organic liquid diluent capable of carring the film-forming polymer, a cross-linking agent for the film-forming polymer, and internally cross-linked polymer microgel particles stably dispersed in the mixture of the film-forming polymer, the diluent and the cross-linking agent. The composition is applied wet-on-wet a metallic color base coat having a similar composition containing the microgel particles and a metallic flake pigment, and cured simultaneously with the base coat.

An acrylic resin composition for use in high solids paints which consists essentially of an acrylic copolymer having a number average molecular weight of 500 to 5000 and being prepared by subjecting a mixture of 30 to 88 weight % of an alkyl (meth)acrylate, 2 to 60 weight % of 2,4-diphenyl-4-methyl-1-pentene, 10 to 40 weight % of a hydroxy bearing ethylenically unsaturated monomer, 0 to 10 weight % of an ethylenic unsaturated acid and 0 to 30 weight % of other copolymerizable monomer(s) to a polymerization with one or more radical initiators. Such high solids paint containing such copolymers can produce coatings with excellent weather resistance, water resistance, scratch resistance and good appearance.

Acrylic resin composition for use in high solids paints

A clear or colored top coating composition containing internally cross-linked microgel particles is disclosed. The microgel particles are produced by emulsion-polymerizing a monomer mixture of ethylenically unsaturated monomers including at least one cross-linking monomer and have a refraction index which is equal or close (.ltoreq.0.05) to that of a surrounding film-forming polymer fully cured with a cross-linking agent.
