The leading edge of a lower pole is constituted by a protruded central parallel portion, opposite end parallel portions, and slanted portions coupling the central parallel portion and the opposite end parallel portions. On a lower magnetic shield film, a lower gap film is formed on which a conductive lead film and a magnet film is laminated. The magnet film forms a bias permanent magnet film for generating a single magnetic domain of a magneto-resistance film. A sensor unit having the magneto-resistance film is formed conformally to the trench and electrically connected to the separated leads. An upper gap layer has a constant thickness and has a recess 56 on its upper surface because of topographical transfer of the underlying steps. An upper shield--lower core layer has a downward convex at its lower surface, because of topographical transfer of the recess on the upper surface of the upper gap layer. However, the upper surface of the upper shield--lower core layer is flat and parallel to the MR element. Therefore, a write gap layer formed thereon is made flat and parallel to the MR element. Steps of the write gap can be removed and a record density can be increased.

At this stage, the slider deforms by changing the back surface in a convex shape, and the ABS itself is maintained flat by the lapping. Thereafter, a one-surface lapping of the back surface is performed to reduce the compressive stresses therein and make the back surface flat while warping the back surface. The slider deforms by changing the ABS in a convex shape and a positive crown on the ABS is formed. The ABS can be lapped flat, and in addition the crown can be formed. Reliability of data read/write can be improved.

A method of manufacturing an air flow type thin film magnetic head includes the steps of providing a slider for a thin film magnetic head; forming a photo-sensitive layer directly on the slider: subjecting the photo-sensitive layer to a light beam having controlled loci to form a desired pattern on the photo-sensitive layer, their: loci of the light beam corresponding to configuration of rails to be formed on a surface of the slider; and forming the rails in accordance with the desired pattern. The loci of the light beam is controlled by a data processor. Various rail patterns including an asymmetrical and non-parallel rail pattern can be easily formed on a slider of a magnetic head.

A thin film magnetic head includes a lower core portion provided on a substrate and having a pole portion, a magnetic gap layer provided on the lower core portion, an insulating layer provided on the magnetic gap layer, conduction coils provided in the insulating layer, an upper core portion provided on the insulating layer, and an overcoat layer provided on the upper core portion. The upper core portion has a pole portion of a reduced width and a non-pole portion having a top-forming portion and an inclined section-forming portion formed on an inclined section of the insulating layer. The inclined section-forming section is made of a plurality of layers and a core angle of an uppermost layer of the plurality of layers of the non-pole portion is set at an angle which is 120 degrees or larger and is smaller than about 180 degrees and a core angle of a lower layer or layers of the plurality of layers of the non-pole portion is set at an angle which is smaller than the core angle of the uppermost layer and is larger than about 60 degrees. In one aspect of the invention, a foremost end portion of the lower layer of the inclined section-forming portion is located rearwardly of a foremost end portion of the the uppermost layer.

Thin film magnetic head having a multilayer upper core

In a thin film magnetic head having a multilayer structure, a plurality of coil conductive layers are piled up to be formed between a lower magnetic layer and an upper magnetic layer. Each coil conductive layer is formed by one spiral-wound coil. The number of turns of the coil of the upper-side coil conductive layer is set smaller than that of the coil of the lower-side coil conductive layer. These coils are connected together such that first and second portions of the connected coils are respectively connected to a center terminal which is provided at the middle position of the connected coils. Thus, the number of turns of the first portion of the connected coils is set identical to that of the second portion of the connected coils. In addition, the winding direction of the first portion is set reverse to that of the second portion. Such coil conductive layers are surrounded by and buried in an insulation layer formed between the lower magnetic layer and upper magnetic layer. Due to the above-mentioned structure, the coil of each coil conductive layer can be easily formed within the insulation layer. Further, the reproduction output and the efficiency of the magnetic circuit can be improved.
