An image communication apparatus converts image data received through a communication line into bit image data to be reproduced as a visible image by means of using a data converting unit and a reproducing unit. An image sensing apparatus senses an image by illuminating a document by a light source including three light emitting diodes which emit light of red, green, and blue so that the light reflected from the document is incident on a sensor array which in turn generates an electric signal corresponding to the incident light, wherein a predetermined light emitting diode is also turned on during a period in which no image sensing operation is performed thereby making it possible to stabilize the intensity of light illuminating an image. Thus, the invention provides a high-performance and small-sized image sensing apparatus at a low cost.

A stepping motor preferably applied to an image reading motor for a facsimile device or the like, drives the rotation with low noise by repeating turning-on and turning-off switching of the driving voltage in the stepping motor when a change of the exciting phase in the stepping motor is not continued for a constant time and performing the repeated switching for a predetermined cycle. At the same time the present motor can prevent the passage of current through all of four phase coils by the manner that a pair of phases in the stepping motor are not simultaneously driven.

A second write device reads in a unit of a line for each color component data written in the first line buffer, and writes each color component data corresponding to the plural lines into a second line buffer having a storage capacity which is larger than that of the first line buffer. A conversion device performs longitudinal-to-lateral conversion by using each color component data corresponding to the plural lines written in the second buffer. An easy-to-use image forming apparatus and method which uses either a monochrome recording cartridge or a plurality of colors recording cartridge, which, when recording an image desired by a user, does not require the user to perform unnecessary operations regarding replacement of a cartridge, change of the kind of recorded image, or selection of a form. A determination is made as to whether or not a correct cartridge is attached based on the kind of the currently attached cartridge and the image desired by the user. When it is determined that the correct cartridge is attached, recording is initiated. When it is determined that the correct cartridge is not attached, a notification prompting replacement is provided to the user. When the user instructs color reading or monochrome reading of the original, a recording operation is carried out by changing the size of the image to an appropriate size in response to the kind of recorder, original size and form size.

In an image forming apparatus, plural LED light sources are provided for emitting lights of respectively different wavelengths, and, in reading an illuminated image with a reading sensor, a lighting mode setting register selects a first mode for reading the image with a single color or a second mode for reading the image with plural colors. The light emitting time of these light sources are set by a light emitting time control register, a light emitting time counter and an automatic light emitting time adjustment circuit, and the currents supplied to the light sources are set by a lighting current control circuit. A CPU controls these circuits according to the selected mode.
