In a golf ball having a core and a cover of at least one layer, the outermost layer of the cover is formed of a resin composition that includes (A) 100 parts by weight of a thermoplastic resin, and (B) 1 to 30 parts by weight of a compound having a fluorene skeleton, or a derivative thereof, and the resin composition has a melt flow rate of at least 3.0 g/10 min. This resin composition for golf balls has an improved injection-moldability and thus enables the ball to achieve both a reduced spin rate and a good durability (scuff resistance).

In a golf ball having a core of at least one layer and a cover of at least one layer, an outermost layer of the cover is formed of an ionomer resin composition which includes specific amounts of (a) an olefin-&#x3b1;,&#x3b2;-unsaturated carboxylic acid copolymer and/or a metal ion neutralization product thereof, or an olefin-&#x3b1;,&#x3b2;-unsaturated carboxylic acid-&#x3b1;,&#x3b2;-unsaturated carboxylic acid ester copolymer and/or a metal ion neutralization product thereof, (b) an oxazoline group-containing polymer, (c) an inorganic filler, and (d) a colorant which includes a fluorescent dye or a fluorescent pigment. This golf ball has a translucent appearance that holds down transparency of the ball surface to a suitable level and undergoes relatively little change in color when fading occurs due to sunlight exposure, and is thus both weather resistant and decorative.

The compatibilizing agent (C) includes: (C-i) two different types of base polymer selected from a specific group, (C-ii) a hydrogenated diene polymer having at least one type of functional moiety selected from a specific group of moieties, and (C-iii) an olefinic polymer having at least one type of functional moiety selected from a specific group of moieties.

A golf ball resin composition contains a base resin for which, in dynamic viscoelasticity measurement, the storage modulus of the base resin measured at 23&#xb0; C., 15 Hz and 1.0% strain, and tan &#x3b4; determined under the same conditions, satisfy specific values; and for which the storage modulus of the base resin measured at 23&#xb0; C., 15 Hz and 10% strain, and tan &#x3b4; determined under the same conditions, satisfy specific values. By using this resin composition as a golf ball cover material, the force delivered to the ball while the ball and the clubface are in contact from impact to follow-through is more easily felt, facilitating distance control of the ball. Controllability with a short iron such as a sand wedge around the green is also excellent.

In a golf ball having a core of at least one layer and a cover of at least one layer, at least one core or cover layer contains a butyl rubber ionomer. A method of manufacturing golf balls having a core of at least one layer and a cover of at least one layer includes the steps of preparing a treatment solution of butyl rubber ionomer dissolved in a solvent, applying the treatment solution to at least one layer of the golf ball, and covering the treated layer with, as an outer layer adjoining thereto, a rubber layer, a resin layer or a paint layer. With this golf ball and golf ball manufacturing method, adhesion between the layers can be improved, enabling the durability of the ball to cracking on impact to be increased.

Golf ball and method of manufacture

A golf ball material includes (A) one, two or more resin ingredients selected from among olefin-unsaturated carboxylic acid random copolymers, olefin-unsaturated carboxylic acid-unsaturated carboxylic acid ester random copolymers, and metal ion neutralization products of these copolymers, (B) one two or more resin ingredients selected from among polyethylenes, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers and polyesters, and (C) the specific agent for compatibilizing components (A) and (B).

A golf ball resin composition includes (A) (I) an olefin-C&#x3b1;,&#x3b2;-unsaturated carboxylic acid copolymer or a metal neutralization product thereof and/or (II) an olefin-C&#x3b1;,&#x3b2;-unsaturated carboxylic acid-C&#x3b1;,&#x3b2;-unsaturated carboxylic acid ester terpolymer or a metal neutralization product thereof; (B) isocyanuric acid or a haloisocyanuric acid; and (C) a fatty acid or a fatty acid metal salt. When this resin composition is used as a cover material, the paint film adhesion between the cover material and various types of paint, including urethane-based paints, is excellent, enabling various properties of the golf ball to be improved.

Resin composition for golf balls

The invention provides a golf ball composition containing an ionomer resin composition of: (A) one or more ionomer selected from the group consisting of an olefin-unsaturated carboxylic acid random copolymer and/or an olefin-unsaturated carboxylic acid-unsaturated carboxylic acid ester random copolymer, and a metal ion neutralization product of an olefin-unsaturated carboxylic acid random copolymer and/or a metal ion neutralization product of an olefin-unsaturated carboxylic acid-unsaturated carboxylic acid ester random copolymer; (B) a polyethylene; and (C) an organic peroxide.

The invention provides a golf ball composition containing an ionomer resin composition of: (A) one or more ionomer selected from the group consisting of an olefin-unsaturated carboxylic acid random copolymer and/o2r an olefin-unsaturated carboxylic acid-unsaturated carboxylic acid ester random copolymer, and a metal ion neutralization product of an olefin-unsaturated carboxylic acid random copolymer and/or a metal ion neutralization product of an olefin-unsaturated carboxylic acid-unsaturated carboxylic acid ester random copolymer; (B) a polyethylene; and (C) an organic peroxide.

A multiple-piece solid core golf ball includes a solid core including an inner core layer and an outer core layer, and a cover disposed on the outside of the solid core. The inner core layer has an outer diameter of at most approximately 25 mm and is formed of a material having a loss tangent (tan &#x3b4;) of at least approximately 0.1. The outer core layer is formed of a material having a loss tangent (tan &#x3b4;) of from approximately 0.01 to approximately 0.1. The difference between the loss tangent (tan &#x3b4;) of the material forming the inner core layer and the loss tangent (tan &#x3b4;) of the material forming the outer core layer is at least approximately 0.05.

Multi-piece solid golf ball

The present invention provides a three-piece solid golf ball having a core obtained by molding under heat a specific rubber composition and having a two-layer cover and an inner cover layer and an outer cover layer which encase the core and are made of a thermoplastic resin material. By optimizing the deflection of the core under a specific load, optimizing the combined thickness of the cover layers, forming the inner cover layer of a highly neutralized ionomer resin composition, and forming the outer cover layer of a special urethane material, a sufficient reduction in the spin rate of the ball on shots taken with a driver can be achieved, enabling the distance traveled by the ball to be increased. Moreover, the golf ball of the invention has a good feel on shots taken with a driver, and has an excellent spin rate on approach shots.

Three-piece solid golf ball

The present invention provides a three-piece solid golf ball having a core molded under heat from a specific rubber composition and inner and outer cover layers encasing the core. By optimizing the core deflection under a specific load and the overall thickness of the cover layers, by forming the inner cover layer of a highly neutralized ionomer resin composition, and by optimizing within specific ranges the Shore D hardnesses of the inner cover layer and the outer cover layer, the spin rate of the ball on shots with a driver can be sufficiently reduced, enabling an increased distance to be achieved.

The invention provides a molded and crosslinked rubber material for golf balls which is obtained by molding and crosslinking a rubber composition containing rubber and rubber compounding ingredients, including a base rubber, a filler and an organic peroxide, into a spherical body of one or more layers. The invention provides a molded polymer material which is obtained by subjecting a polymer composition that includes (A) at least one polymer containing &#x3b1;,&#x3b2;-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, (B) at least one diene polymer, (C) at least one metal cation source, and (D) at least one organic peroxide, and has a chemical structure arrived at by neutralizing some or all of the carboxyl groups in component A with component C in the presence of component B, to molding and crosslinking under the influence of radicals generated by decomposing component D. The molded polymer material has a high resilience, a high hardness and a good durability, making it well-suited for use in golf balls.
