The color image processing system includes a print data receiving unit that receives print data, a bitmap data producing unit that produces bitmap data having colors that correspond to the plurality of color developers from the print data, a data size determining unit that determines a data size of the bitmap data, and a degrading unit. When the data size determined by the data size determining unit is greater than a predetermined size, the degrading unit produces bitmap data having fewer colors, wherein a predetermined color is removed from the colors corresponding to the plurality of color developers.

When a multiple-color image is printed by electrophotography unwanted spaces are produces between different colors. These spaces are attributed to non-development of toner caused by the influence of an electric field at the boundary of an electrostatic latent image formed on a photosensitive drum. Accordingly, when data conversion is converted from two-bit data of a bitmap to eight-bit data that are used for modulating a light signal, a pixel of interest and the neighboring 9&times;9 pixels are stored and the state thereof is determined. If the pixel of interest is a white pixel and the neighboring pixels are all non-white pixels, then the pixel of interest is not left at a value corresponding to white, but is converted to a value corresponding to a potential that will not develop toner. The photosensitive drum is irradiated with a laser based upon the data resulting from the conversion. Thus, a sudden conversion from a potential corresponding to white to a potential corresponding to the maximum density is eliminated at the outline of the image. This makes it possible to prevent the influence of an electric field at the edge of the image and, hence, to prevent the occurrence of unwanted spaces between colors.

An output apparatus capable of receiving multi-level dot information of a first recording dot density, generating multi-level dot information of a second recording dot density, and transmitting the thus-generated second dot information in a visible way. The output apparatus comprises: a receiving device capable of receiving multi-level dot information of a first recording dot density; a generating device capable of generating multi-level interpolation dot information by applying a predetermined calculation to the thus-received multi-level dot information; and a dot density conversion device capable of generating multi-level dot information of a second, higher recording dot density from said interpolation dot information and the received multi-level dot information, whereby high density image data can be generated from low density image data.

In processing an image represented by binary data and an image represented by multivalue data, multivalue picture information is converted into a binary pattern corresponding to a value of the multivalue picture information, and stored in a memory. The present invention is structured in such a manner that, when multivalued pixel data which constitutes a multivalued image are supplied, a predetermined number of interpolated pixel data are generated and inserted between the supplied and successive pixels. At this time, the gradient of each of the interpolated pixels is calculated and determined in accordance with the gradient of the supplied neighboring multivalued pixels. Thus, the image is recorded on a recording medium in accordance with image data including the interpolated pixel. As a result, print information processed so as to be printed by a low resolution printer can be printed with the same size and high quality as when printed by a high resolution printer according to the present invention.

An information recording apparatus for recording a color image with improved resolving power and image quality is disclosed. Color image data are temporarily stored in a memory and compared with predetermined patterns in a wide reference area. If they coincide, indicating the presence of a contour of a pattern, an object pixel is modified to finer dots, in order to smooth the contour. There are also provided patterns indicating the features of dither images, in order to identify whether the color image data correspond to such dither image, and to avoid erroneous smoothing process that deteriorates the image quality of such dither image.
