An engine mounting structure for a motorcycle including a plurality of resilient members for connecting the engine to the vehicle body frame. The resilient member located at the position nearest to the rear wheel is given a resilient property being uniform in the vertical and fore-and-aft directions, and remaining resilient members are given a non-uniform resilient property being hard in the vertical direction and flexible in the fore-and-aft direction. With this configuration, even when the rear wheel moves horizontally in the lateral direction, the influence is attenuated while being transferred to the vehicle body frame. When a resilient member being hard in the vertical direction is used, the behavior of the rear wheel such as the vertical swinging motion or lateral turn can immediately be transferred to the vehicle body frame. Therefore, drivability of the motorcycle during high-speed driving is improved.

Engine mounting structure for motorcycles

A scooter type motorcycle includes a rear fork for supporting a rear wheel of the motorcycle. A front portion of the rear fork is attached to a crankcase of an engine in a vertically swingable manner. The engine is mounted to a body frame through elastic members. The mounting arrangement enhances the comfort of the ride of the motorcycle by reducing vibrations from being transmitted from the rear wheel to the rider.

A spring system for applying a restoring force to a reciprocating member such as an exhaust or intake valve of an internal combustion engine, comprising: a helical spring having open ends and consisting of titanium or an alloy thereof; and a spring seat supporting one of the two ends of the helical spring. Since this helical spring is provided with open ends, mutual striking of the coil wire can be avoided and, thereby, the durability of the helical spring can be ensured in addition to the advantage obtained from the low-mass and high transverse elastic modulus of titanium or its alloy.

A device for switching valve operation modes in an internal combustion engine with a rotatable camshaft having cams integral therewith, valves disposed in intake or exhaust ports of the combustion chamber and normally urged closed by a spring, and the valves being openable by the cams through a plurality of rocker arms disposed adjacent to each other for imparting the cam lifts to the valves. A coupling mechanism selectively connects and disconnects the rocker arms by means of pistons in aligned guide holes in the rocker arms movable between positions to either extend across the adjacent sides of the rocker arms or be aligned with such sides. A solenoid is provided in one rocker arm and surrounds a piston to selectively cause movement of that piston. Springs urge the pistons to the position controlled by the solenoid.

Device for switching valve operation modes in an internal combustion

A valve operating mechanism for an internal combustion engine wherein a plurality of rotatable cams have different cam profiles for operating an intake or exhaust valve differently in high and low speed ranges of the engine. A plurality of rocker arms are selectively connected or disconnected for transmitting the appropriate cam lift to the valve depending on the engine speed range. The cam profiles have dampening areas at the start of opening and the finish of closing of the valve. The dampening areas of the high speed cam have a smaller rate of change than the dampening areas of the low speed cam to minimize the possibility of engagement by a rocker arm with a cam for one speed while the engine is operating at another speed by another cam and rocker arm.

Valve operating mechanism for internal combustion engine

Apparatus for controlling the operation of intake or exhaust valves of an internal combustion engine in which cam-driven rocker arms that operate the valves are selectively connected or disconnected for movement in unision or for independent movement in order to open and close the valves in accordance with the various modes of engine operation. Control of the valves is produced by the cooperative effect of hydraulic pressure and variable spring forces whereby more accurate valve operation over a greater number of engine operating modes is achieved.

Apparatus for maintaining the cam follower for operating a valve for an internal combustion engine in biased engagement against the cam includes a first spring operative to bias the cam follower under a low speed engine operating condition and a second spring series-connected to the first spring and having a spring constant greater than that of the first spring operative to bias the cam follower under a high speed engine operating condition.

A valve operating mechanism for an internal combustion engine having a pair of intake valves or exhaust valves in each cylinder with a first and a second rocker arm corresponding to the pair of valves and a cam for pivoting the first rocker arm. The rocker arms are provided with a connecting mechanism having a piston assembly which is movable between a position in which both said rocker arms are connected and a position in which both said rocker arms are disconnected from each other whereby either both valves of the pair or only one valve may be selectively actuated. A trigger member in the first rocker arm selectively restricts the movement of the piston and a timing cam engages and actuates the trigger member.

A lubricating apparatus in an internal combustion engine of the horizontal type in which a main oil gallery for feeding oil to engine portions to be lubricated is provided substantially parallel to the engine crank shaft in the bearing cap secured to engine block for rotatably supporting the crank shaft, and an oil filter is provided on the bearing cap at a central portion in the direction of the crank shaft. The oil pump is provided on one end of the crank shaft and oil passages are formed in the bearing cap for conducting the oil from the oil pump to the oil filter and then from the oil filter to the central portion of said main gallery.
