A high molecular weight polyimidoylamidine having an intrinsic viscosity of from 0.25 dl/g to 0.60 dl/g and a high molecular weight polytriazine derived therefrom having an intrinsic viscosity of from 0.25 dl/g to 0.65 dl/g are disclosed. A polyimidoylamidine having a molecular weight in a wide range, including high molecular weight, can advantageously be obtained by reacting a perfluoropolyether dinitrile with ammonia and reacting the resultant reaction product with a specific amount of a perfluoropolyether dinitrile. A terminal-stabilized polytriazine and its preparation methods are also disclosed. A polytrizine, which contains a nitrile group at side chains thereof and has an intrinsic viscosity within a specific range, is particularly suitable as a precursor of a perfluoroelastomer having excellent mechanical and chemical properties.

A process for the treatment of a quaternary onium salt is described. The process comprises the steps of (i) contacting an organic phase soaringly miscible in water containing a quaternary onium fluorine-containing carboxylate of RfCO.sub.2.sup.-+ AR.sup.1 R.sup.2 R.sup.3 R.sup.4 as defined in the present Specification with an aqueous phase containing a thiocyanate ion to form a quaternary onium thiocyanate in the organic phase and (ii) contacting the organic phase containing the quaternary onium thiocyanate with an aqueous solution containing a water-soluble oxidizing agent to decompose the thiocyanate ion and to form an easily ion exchangeable quaternary onium salt. Also, applications of this treatment to a process for preparing hexafluoropropylene oxide from hexafluoropropylene in a two-phase system of an aqueous phase and an organic phase by using a hypochlorite as an oxidizing agent in the presence of a quaternary onium salt as a catalyst are described.

Process for the treatment of quaternary onium salts and its application

A process for epoxidation of a fluoro-olefin is disclosed. The process comprises epoxidizing a fluoro-olefin represented by the general formula (I): ##STR1## wherein X.sup.1, X.sup.2 and X.sup.3 each represents a substituent selected from (a)--F, (b) a perfluoroalkyl group having 2 to 20 carbon atoms and (c) --CF.sub.2 Y.sup.1, Y.sup.1 may be the same or different and represents a substituent selected from (d) a halogen atom selected from F, Cl, Br and I, (e) --OZ.sup.1 and (f) --Z.sup.1, wherein Z.sup.1 may be the same or different and represents a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon group having not more than 20 carbon atoms, and X.sup.1, X.sup.2, X.sup.3 and Y.sup.1 may be combined with one another to form a cyclic compound, provided that all of X.sup.1, X.sup.2, X.sup.3 and Y.sup.1 do not represent --F; using a hypochlorite dissolved or suspended in an aqueous phase as an oxidizing agent in the presence or absence of an inorganic base. The reaction is performed in a two phase system (aqueous and organic phases) in the presence of at least one phase transfer catalyst selected from (i) quaternary ammonium salts, (ii) quaternary phosphonium salts, (iii) quaternary arsonium salts, (iv) sulfonium salts and (v) lipophilic complexing agents for cations contained in the hypochlorite.

Fluoroepoxides and a process for production thereof

A process for epoxidation of a fluoro-olefin is disclosed. The process comprises epoxidizing a fluoro-olefin represented by the general formula (I): ##STR1## wherein X.sup.1, X.sup.2 and X.sup.3 each represents a substituent selected from (a) --F, (b) a perfluoroalkyl group having 2 to 20 carbon atoms and (c) --CF.sub.2 Y.sup.1, Y.sup.1 may be the same or different and represents a substituent selected from (d) a halogen atom selected from F, Cl, Br and I, (e) --OZ.sup.1 and (f) --Z.sup.1, wherein Z.sup.1 may be the same or different and represents a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon group having not more than 20 carbon atoms, and X.sup.1, X.sup.2, X.sup.3 and Y.sup.1 may be combined with one another to form a cyclic compound, provided that all of X.sup.1, X.sup.2, X.sup.3 and Y.sup.1 do not represent --F; using a hypochlorite dissolved or suspended in an aqueous phase as an oxidizing agent in the presence or absence of an inorganic base. The reaction is performed in a two phase system (aqueous and organic phases) in the presence of at least one phase transfer catalyst selected from (i) quaternary ammonium salts, (ii) quaternary phosphonium salts, (iii) quaternary arsonium salts, (iv) sulfonium salts and (v) lipophilic complexing agents for cations contained in the hypochlorite.

A process for producing hexafluoropropylene oxide from hexafluoropropylene is described. The process comprises epoxidizing hexafluoropropylene in a two-phase system of an aqueous phase and an organic phase by the use of a hypochlorite as an oxidizing agent, the hypochlorite being dissolved or dispersed in the aqueous phase, in the presence of at least one catalyst selected from the group consisting of (a) quaternary ammonium salts, (b) quaternary phosphonium salts, (c) quaternary arsonium salts, and (d) lipophilic complexing agents for cations contained in the hypochlorite, and also, in the presence or absence of an inorganic base.

A process for purifying a polyalkylene ether, which comprises mixing a polyalkylene ether or a mixture of a polyalkylene ether and an organic solvent containing a heteropoly acid and/or its salt with at least one solvent for purification selected from hydrocarbons having 3 to 15 carbon atoms or halogenated hydrocarbons having 1 to 15 carbon atoms and separating by precipitation the phase composed mainly of the heteropoly acid and/or its salt, and a process wherein the polyalkylene ether or a mixture of a polyalkylene ether and an organic solvent containing a heteropoly acid and/or its salt is brought into contact with a solid adsorbent capable of adsorbing the heteropoly acid and/or its salt in the presence of at least one solvent for purification as described above, either further after the separation according to the process described above, or in the state unseparated. According to the present invention, the heteropoly acid and/or its salt dissolved in the polyalkylene ether or the mixture of the polyalkylene ether with the organic solvent can be removed efficiently in the form which can be reused. Further after the treatment with an adsorbent, the concentration of heteropoly acids in the polyalkylene ether can be reduced to extremely lower.

A process for producing a polyoxytetramethylene glycol or a copolymerized polyetherglycol by polymerizing tetrahydrofuran or a mixture of tetrahydrofuran with other cyclic ethers copolymerizable therewith, which comprises using a heteropoly-acid as a catalyst and permitting 0.1 to 15 mol of water per mol of the heteropolyacid to be present in the catalyst phase. In purifying methyl methacrylate by feeding a feed mixture containing methanol, methyl methacrylate and 0.05 to 2% by weight, based on the weight of the methyl Methacrylate, of methyl isobutyrate to a first distillation column, subjecting the same to distillation therein in the presence of a saturated hydrocarbon having 6 or 7 carbon atoms while distilling out said saturated hydrocarbon, the methanol, a small amount of the methyl methacrylate and the methyl isobutyrate through the top of the first distillation column and simultaneously recovering methyl methacrylate freed from methanol and methyl isobutyrate from the bottom of the distillation column, wherein the top distillate is cooled in the decanter to be separated into two layers, the resulting upper layer composed mainly of the saturated hydrocarbon is returned to the first distillation column and the resulting lower layer composed mainly of methanol is fed to a second distillation column in which distillation is conducted while recovering the saturated hydrocarbon dissolved in the lower layer together with a part of the methanol from the top of the second distillation column and sending the same to the decanter, and withdrawing methanol, methyl isobutyrate and a small amount of methyl methacrylate from the bottom of the second distillation column, the methyl methacrylate can be effectively purified in high yield by allowing the saturated hydrocarbon to be present only above the feed stage of the first distillation column to which the feed mixture is fed, cooling the top distillate of the first distillation column to 0.degree.-13.degree. C. in the decanter, providing distillation stages above the feed stage of the second distillation column and conducting distillation while returning a part of the top distillate of the second distillation column to the top of the second distillation column, thereby separating methanol and methyl isobutyrate from methyl methacrylate.
