A method for manufacturing ultrafine fibers having an average diameter of less than 1 &#x3bc;m is implemented by an apparatus including a feeder and a drawing chamber in communication with the feeder via an orifice having a pressure difference. The method includes introducing a multifilament to the drawing chamber under the condition that the ratio of the cross-section of the multifilament to the cross-section of the orifice rectifier is 50% or less, and irradiating the discharged multifilament such that the center of the multifilament melted thereby is located 1 to 15 mm apart vertically below the orifice outlet to melt the leading portion of the multifilament and cause the multifilament to swing at a maximum angle of 5 to 80 degrees to the central orifice axis within a conical space, such that the melted leading portion of the multifilament is drawn by an air stream generated by the pressure difference.

A lithium-ion secondary battery separator resolves defects of a non-woven fabric separator which is not suitable for use in such a battery. The separator is thin and does not short-circuit and has excellent electrolyte retainability and rate characteristics. The separator includes a composite of a non-woven fabric having a basis weight of 2 to 20 g/mformed from fibers of a thermoplastic material having an average fiber diameter of 5 to 40 &#x3bc;m and ultra-microfibers having an average fiber diameter of 1 &#x3bc;m or less in an amount of &#x2153; to 3 times the mass of the non-woven fabric. The composite has a thickness of 10 to 40 &#x3bc;m after heat-pressing treatment under conditions that the non-woven fabric has a glossiness (JIS Z 8741) measured at 60&#xb0; in the range of 3 to 30 and a thickness of 10 to 40.

The present invention provides an electrolyte for a Li storage battery comprising a compound that can improve safety of a storage battery without causing the degradation in performances thereof and a Li storage battery comprising the electrolyte. The electrolyte comprises at least 1,1-diphenylethane the Li storage battery comprises the electrolyte. Disclosed is a highly safe battery separator, in particular a separator for a lithium ion secondary battery, which reduces internal resistance, achieves good ionic conductivity, prevents passing of electrode active materials, and also prevents electrical short circuit by controlling deposition of lithium metal (dendrite). Also disclosed is a means for stably producing the battery separator with high productivity. Specifically disclosed are: a battery separator which is composed of a porous polyolefin sheet that is formed from a group of polyolefin nanofilaments that have an average filament diameter of less than 1 &#x3bc;m and a filament size distribution of 0.2 or less; and a means for producing the battery separator.

Spheroidizing treatment is appropriately performed for natural graphite having a high capacity by grinding and/or applying impact to form a negative electrode active material, and a negative electrode active layer formed therefrom is provided on a metal electrode foil. Subsequently, the metal electrode foil is applied with a magnetic field so that the spheroidized natural graphite is oriented, followed by drying and compression molding, thereby forming a negative electrode. By the use of this negative electrode, a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery can be formed having superior battery properties such as the cycle properties and peeling strength.

A non-aqueous electrolyte secondary cell which achieves satisfactory low temperature characteristics and high safety against overcharging in combination. The cell includes a lithium-containing cathode, an anode capable of doping and undoping lithium, a non-aqueous electrolyte and a separator. The separator is made up by a plurality of layers of a porous material or materials presenting micro-sized pores. The layers of the porous material or materials is formed of micro-porous separator materials representing different combinations of the porosity, melting point or material/compositions.

Graphite powders suited for negative electrode material of lithium ion secondary battery

A method for making a negative electrode component used in a nonaqueous secondary battery that includes the steps of polishing the surface of the negative electrode component by irradiating the surface with light to produce a negative electrode that includes a carbonaceous material in which the ratio RG=Gs/Gb is at least 4.5, where Gs is the degree of graphitization the carbonaceous material as determined by a surface-enhanced Raman spectrum and Gb is degree of graphitization of the carbonaceous material as determined by a Raman spectrum measured using argon laser light and both Gs and Gb are measured under set parameters.

Method for making negative electrode component including a carbonaceous material for use in a nonaqueous secondary battery

A nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery is provided with a positive electrode including a positive-electrode active material, a negative electrode including a negative-electrode active material, and a nonaqueous electrolyte solution. The negative electrode further includes carbon fibers and carbon flakes. The synergistic effects of the improved retention of the electrolyte solution by the carbon fibers and the improved conductivity between the active material particles by the carbon flakes facilitate doping/undoping of lithium in a high-load current mode and increase the capacity of the battery in the high-load current mode.

Non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery having a negative electrode containing carbon fibers and carbon flakes

Provided is a battery with a higher capacity and superior charge-discharge cycle characteristics. A cathode contained in a package can and an anode contained in a package cup are laminated with a separator in between. The separator is impregnated with an electrolyte solution formed by dissolving lithium salt in a solvent. The anode comprises a tin-containing material including metallic tin and an intermetallic compound including tin in the same particle. A higher capacity and superior charge-discharge cycles can be obtained by the tin-containing material.

Anode material and battery using the same

The battery comprises a positive electrode which has a positive electrode active material compound layer containing a positive electrode active material formed on a positive electrode current collector; a negative electrode which has at least one negative electrode thin film layer and at least one negative electrode active material compound layer, on a negative electrode current collector, and a non-aqueous electrolyte containing an electrolyte salt. The negative electrode thin film layer contains at least one Group 14 element, and is formed by a thin-film formation technology, and the negative electrode active material compound layer contains a binder and a negative electrode active material, which contains at least any one of Sn, Si, Sn compound, Si compound and carbonaceous material. With this negative electrode, the negative electrode thin film layer containing a high-capacity Group 14 element raises the battery capacity, and the negative electrode active material compound layer provides excellent charge/discharge cycle characteristics while suppressing degradation of the negative electrode even under repetitive charge/discharge.

Non-aqueous electrolyte battery and method of manufacturing the same

A secondary battery which exhibits less deterioration of capacity, can maintain high energy densities in high temperature atmospheres, and has high practicality, and an electrolyte used therefor, are provided. The electrolyte contains an anion expressed by (PFQR), so degradation of the electrolyte can be prevented. In the formula, Q expresses at least one of CF, CF, and CF, and R expresses SOCFand/or SOCF. a, b and c satisfy 1&#x2266;a&#x2266;5, 0&#x2266;b&#x2266;5, and, 0&#x2266;c&#x2266;5, respectively. Furthermore, an anion expressed by N(CFSO)is contained, which can further prevent the degradation of the electrolyte. In the formula, n satisfies 1&#x2266;n&#x2266;2. Therefore, the capacity recovery rate after storage and heavy load discharge maintenance rate are high even in high temperature atmospheres, and high reliability can be obtained.
