An electrophoresis apparatus includes a sample separating section for containing a sample separating medium for separating a sample in a horizontal direction, the sample separating section containing the sample separating medium in such a manner that the sample separating medium has an exposed portion at least one end of a surface of the sample separating medium, the surface being in parallel with the horizontal direction; and medium connecting means for connecting a sample containing medium to the sample separating medium at a connecting region, the sample containing medium containing a sample, and the connecting region satisfying a particular equation. By this, an electrophoresis technique with better accuracy than conventional arts can be provided.

A biological molecule separation apparatus for separating a biological molecule of one embodiment of the present invention has a buffer solution chamber receiving a buffer solution, a separation electrode arranged in the buffer solution chamber, a biological molecule separation medium for separating a biological molecule, a biological molecule adsorption film for adsorbing a biological molecule, a pair of transfer electrodes having a plurality of line shaped conductors extending in a direction perpendicular to a first direction, the conductors being arranged in the direction perpendicular to the first direction, and a separation part which holds the transfer electrode, the biological molecule adsorption film, the medium and the transfer electrode, wherein the transfer electrode, the biological molecule adsorption film, the medium and the transfer electrode are stacked in this order.

Transfer of fluid substances, and/or substances comprised in fluid substances, is controlled by introducing a separation medium, which prevents transfer of the fluid substances, and/or the substances comprised in the fluid substances, to an intermediate cavity connecting a first cavity and a second cavity; and introducing a connection medium to replace the separation medium and thereby start substance transfer to the second cavity. The present invention is to provide a sample separation instrument used in a sample separation apparatus which includes: holding means for holding a first medium supporter which supports a first medium; and driving means for moving fixing means or the holding means in a direction parallel or perpendicular to a plane whose sides extend in the first direction and in the second directions. The sample separation instrument includes an insulator for storing a second medium which allows a sample separated in the first medium in the first direction to be further separated in the second direction different from the first direction, wherein: the insulator includes a first opening and a second opening each of which defines the second direction in which the second medium is electrified, and the second opening has a shape which allows the first medium containing the separated sample to be attached to the second medium along the first direction. The present invention realizes automation of the two-dimensional electrophoresis to enhance the convenience of the two-dimensional electrophoresis, to less depend on the operator's skill, and to enhance the reproducibility of the electrophoresis result.
