There is disclosed a valve timing controller having excellent response and used with an internal combustion engine. The controller performs a corrective control operation according to the oil pressure control characteristics of the actually mounted valve. The valve timing controller comprises an intake cam, an exhaust cam, an actuator for varying the phase of rotation of one of the cams relative to the crankshaft of the engine, an oil pressure control valve for applying oil pressure on the actuator, and a control means for controlling the valve timing by controlling the oil pressure output from the oil pressure control valve. The oil pressure output is controlled by controlling the current through the solenoid in the oil pressure control valve. The two cams are driven by the crankshaft of the engine. The intake cam opens and closes the intake valve. The exhaust cam opens and closes the exhaust valve. The control means detects the currents supplied into the solenoid to activate the actuator in different operating conditions of the engine. The characteristics of the oil pressure control valve are detected from the difference in the current value under these different operating conditions. An amount of control current is determined.

Control system for internal combustion engine

A valve timing control system for an internal combustion engine, comprising a required advance amount calculating section for calculating a required advance amount on the basis of operating condition of the engine, a valve timing control section for calculating a valve timing control variable on the basis of an obtained advance amount and the required advance amount calculated by the required advance amount calculating section, and a time period measuring section for measuring an elapsed time after the start of the engine. The required advance amount calculating section makes a calculation so that the required advance amount assumes a value smaller than that in an normal state until the time period measuring section measures a predetermined period of time. Hence, exhaust gas clarification immediately after the engine start, fuel consumption and drivability can be improved.

To this end, a control apparatus for an internal combustion engine includes a variable valve timing mechanism, an actual advance amount detector for detecting an actual valve timing position every predetermined crank angle position, a target advance amount setter for setting a target valve timing based upon a detection result of the operating condition detector, a controller for controlling the variable valve timing mechanism, an advance amount deviation calculator for calculating a deviation between the target advance amount and the actual advance amount every predetermined crank angle position, a differential value calculator for calculating, every predetermined time, a deviation between a current value of advance amount deviation and a preceding value thereof, and a control amount calculator for calculating a control amount used in the controller based upon both the advance amount deviation and the differential value.

A control device for an internal combustion engine includes a crank angle detecting device, which detects the crank angle of the internal combustion engine; a cam angle detecting device, which is installed in a variable cam shaft which variably rotates with respect to a crank shaft and detects a cam angle; a device for generating a cylinder identifying signal, which is separately located from the cam angle detector and generates the cylinder identifying signal, which identifies cylinders of the internal combustion engine; a device for varying valve timing, which varies the cam angle with respect to the crank angle; a valve timing controller, which controls the varying valve timing device; and a mechanism for controlling the internal combustion engine even when the cam angle detecting device is troubled because a control of supplying fuel and igniting is based on an identification of the cylinders by a signal from the device for generating the cylinder identifying signal.

A valve timing control device for use in an internal combustion engine includes a valve timing controller for variably controlling the open/close timing of intake and exhaust valves of the internal combustion engine, a drive force estimator provided in the valve timing controller for estimating a drive force of a VVT actuator on the basis of a hydraulic pressure supplied thereto, and a variable control limiter for limiting control made by the valve timing controller when the drive force of the VVT actuator, which is estimated by the drive force estimator, is equal to or less than a variable valve timing control limit boundary value.
