A liquid crystal display device, which includes a first substrate and a second substrate disposed to face each other with a liquid crystal sandwiched therebetween. The first substrate is an electrode-provided substrate having a first electrode and a plurality of second electrodes overlaid on the first electrode via an insulating film, formed on a pixel region on a surface on the liquid crystal side, where one of the first electrode and the second electrodes is a pixel electrode and the other is a counter electrode, having a first liquid crystal alignment film formed on the surface on the liquid crystal side of the first substrate covered with the second electrodes. The second substrate is a substrate having a second liquid crystal alignment film formed on a surface on the liquid crystal side, the second liquid crystal alignment film containing a photosensitive side chain type polymer which develops liquid crystallinity.

Liquid crystal display device

To provide a liquid crystal aligning agent to obtain a liquid crystal alignment film which has favorable seal adhesion and a favorable residual image property, and which is excellent in removability of a decomposed product formed after irradiation with ultraviolet rays. A liquid crystal aligning agent containing at least one polymer selected from the group consisting of a polyimide precursor having structural units represented by the formula (1) and structural units represented by the formula (2) and an imidized polymer of the polyimide precursor: wherein Xand Xare a tetravalent organic group, Yand Yare a bivalent organic group, and Rand Rare a hydrogen atom or a Calkyl group.

Liquid crystal aligning agent, liquid crystal alignment film and liquid crystal display device

To provide a liquid crystal aligning agent to obtain a liquid crystal alignment film which is excellent in the adhesion to a sealing agent and in the liquid crystal alignment property. A liquid crystal aligning agent containing at least one polymer selected from the group consisting of a polyimide precursor having structural units represented by the formula (1) and structural units represented by the formula (3) and an imidized polymer of the polyimide precursor: wherein Xand Xare a tetravalent organic group, Yis a bivalent organic group having a thermally-leaving group, Yis a bivalent organic group, Rand Rare a hydrogen atom or a Calkyl group, and Zand Zare a hydrogen atom, or a Calkyl group, Calkenyl group or Calkynyl group which may have a substituent.

To provide a liquid crystal aligning agent to obtain a liquid crystal alignment film which is excellent in the adhesion to a sealing agent and a substrate of a liquid crystal display device, and of which a decomposed product formed after irradiation with ultraviolet rays will easily be removed. A liquid crystal aligning agent containing at least one polymer selected from the group consisting of a polyimide precursor having a bond represented by the following formula (1) in its main chain and an imidized polymer of the polyimide precursor: wherein each of R, R, Rand Rwhich are independent of one another, is a hydrogen atom or a Cmonovalent hydrocarbon group which may have a substituent, and D is a protecting group to be replaced with a hydrogen atom by heat.
