The present invention relates to a recombinant yeast cell comprising a gene encoding a protein exhibiting lactyl-CoA synthase activity and a gene encoding a protein exhibiting lactyl-CoA polymerase activity, said recombinant cell having the ability of producing polylactic acid (PLA), and the uses thereof.

The present invention relates to a method for obtaining a mutant strain of oleaginous yeast which is useful as a template strain of yeast for obtaining other mutant strains of oleaginous yeast which are capable of producing an unusual fatty acid. The present invention also relates to the mutant strains of yeast obtained by said method.

The subject of the present invention is a novel mutant yeast strain, particularly astrain, capable of accumulate a large quantity of lipids. The said strain does not express the GUT2 gene. According to one variant, the invention relates to mutant yeast strains, particularlystrains, which do not express the GUT2 gene and which furthermore do not carry out the &#x3b2;-oxidation of lipids. Preferably, the mutant strains which do not express the GUT2 gene and which furthermore do not carry out &#x3b2;-oxidation of lipids do not express the POX 2 through POX 5 genes, most preferably the POX 1 through 6 genes. The subject of the invention is also a method for producing the strains according to the invention and the use of the said strains in the production of lipids.
