A soil-less habitat medium, especially for ants, allows the sustained viability of an ant or ant colony without the provision of additional nutrients. The medium comprises the combination of a culture medium and a chemical agent to reduce or prevent microbial contamination of the culture medium. The medium is preferably in the form of a clear or tinted gel, and allows the ants to be observed throughout the medium. The medium is of particular value for use in an ant vivaria.

The present invention encompasses compositions and methods to reduce or prevent microbial growth in plant tissue culture media, comprising adding a chemical agent comprising methylchloroisothiazolinone, methylisothiazolinone, magnesium chloride and magnesium nitrate to a plant culture medium at a concentration that reduces or prevents microbial contamination of the plant tissue culture medium and that allows substantially normal germination of seeds or substantially normal growth or development of plants, plant organs, plant tissues or plant cells. The chemical agent may further comprise potassium sorbate or sodium benzoate, or both. The present invention further provides a kit for germinating plant seeds or culturing plants, plant organs, plant tissues or plant cells on a plant tissue culture medium comprising the chemical agent.

Compositions and methods to prevent microbial contamination of plant

A sterilized plant culture medium comprising a dye in an amount which imparts a visible color to the culture medium and which permits seed germination is provided which is useful for attracting children, for observing and studying seed germination, root and shoot formation and whole plant development, and for color-coding plant cultures.

Pepper explant material is transformed by incubation with Agrobacterium cells carrying an exogenous DNA sequence. The pepper explant is preferably obtained from either the young embryonic cotyledon or the young expanded cotyledon, and transformed shoots are preferably induced directly in the explant material without passage through a callus phase. Whole transformed pepper plants may be regenerated from the transformed shoots by rooting and subsequent planting in the soil. The exogenous DNA will be stably incorporated into the chromosomes of the regenerated pepper plant which will be able to express gene(s) encoded by the DNA sequence. An improved method for regenerating pepper plants, without transformation, is also described. Regeneration to produce tetraploids is a further embodiment of this invention.
