Methods and systems for enhancing a web page are described. Consistent with some embodiments, a content enhancement server analyzes receives a user's web search query submitted to a search engine during a web browsing session. Using the received web search query, the content enhancement server performs various algorithmic operations to select text within a web page being presented to a user for conversion to an interactive link, and/or to select content (e.g., an advertisement) to be presented in connection with the presentation of the web page.

Techniques for leveraging social information, including a social graph, to identify content likely to be of interest to a user are described. With some embodiments, a content enhancement server receives a request for web-based content that is to be presented with a web page that is being presented at a client computing device. The server will then identify some web-based content that is relevant to a topic or subject matter of the web page, and also popular as determined by analyzing some social information, including in some instances information relating to asocial graph of the viewing user, that is associated with the web-based content. Finally, some items of web-based content are selected, based on a combination of the content's relevance and popularity as indicated by the analysis of the social information. The selected web content is then communicated to the client computing device for presentation with the web page.

Various techniques are disclosed for delivering contextual advertising information to end users of a data network via a mobile device. At least one operation may be initiated to determine the features, capabilities and/or services supported at an identified mobile device. A first contextual advertising delivery technique may be implemented in response to a determination that a first type of functionality is supported at the identified mobile device. A second contextual advertising delivery technique may be implemented in response to a determination that the first type of functionality is not supported at the identified mobile device.

Various techniques are disclosed for generating markup information to be displayed on a client computer system. A document (e.g. a web page) is selected for viewing via a web browser on the client system. Selected information relating to the document is parsed and analyzed using selected keyword information. In a specific implementation, the selected keyword information is provided by an entity other than the end user. Using the selected keyword information, specific context in the document is selected to be marked up. Markup operations may be implemented on at least a portion of the selected document context and displayed at the client system.

Dynamic document context mark-up technique implemented over a computer network

A technique is described for delivering contextual information to end users of a data network which includes at least one client system associated with an end user. According to a specific embodiment, the technique of the present invention provides a contextual-based platform for delivering to an end user in real-time proactive, personalized, contextual information relating to web page content currently being displayed to the user. A portion of web page content relating to a web page intended for display on the client system is received. According to a specific embodiment, the web page corresponds to a URL associated with a content provider. The portion of web page content is analyzed for keyword information. A portion of keyword information associated with the portion of web page content is identified. According to a specific embodiment, the portion of keyword information includes at least one keyword. Contextual information to be delivered to the end user is selected using the portion of keyword information. According to a specific implementation, the contextual information corresponds to ad information which is provided by a campaign provider server system. A set of web page modification instructions is generated using the contextual information. According to a specific embodiment, the set of web page modification instructions includes instructions for modifying the web page content to include the selected contextual information. The set of web page modification instructions is provided to the client system to thereby cause the portion of contextual information to be delivered to the user. According to a specific embodiment, when the client system implements the web page modification instructions, the web page content is caused to be modified in a manner which results in a display of contextual information on the client system.

A technique is disclosed for generating markup information to be displayed on a client computer system. The client system includes memory configured to store at least one update file which comprises keyword information relating to keywords suitable for markup. In one implementation, the update file is generated at a remote server system and downloaded to the client system. When a new document (e.g. a web page) is displayed on the client system to an end user, selected context associated from the document is analyzed for selected keywords. In a specific implementation, the selected keyword information is provided by an entity other than the end user. Using the selected keyword information, specific context in the document is selected to be marked up. According to a specific embodiment, the selection of the document context to be marked up may be performed at the client system. Markup operations are then implemented at the client system on at least a portion of the selected document context, thereby resulting in marked up document context which has a visual appearance that is different than the appearance of the initial parsed context. Additionally, a pop-up advertisement may be automatically displayed on the client system based upon the identified context in the document. When the user clicks on a portion of the marked up document context, the user may be redirected to a target URL which was not included as part of the initial parsed document context. Alternatively, a pop-up window or layer which includes a plurality of different links may be displayed to the user.
