A single-sided four-way indexable cutting insert includes a positive basic shape, a rake surface, a peripheral surface including four side abutment surfaces, a base bearing surface and a screw hole connecting the rake and base bearing surfaces. The insert has an imaginary square frustum which defines a square base containing the cutting insert's base bearing surface, and further defines four isosceles trapezoid side surfaces respectively containing the cutting insert's four side abutment surfaces. A tool holder has a tool body with at least one pocket for receiving at least one cutting insert. The at least one pocket has a support surface and an abutment surface transverse thereto, and a first stress relief surface located between the support surface and the abutment surface. The first stress relief surface extends along a first axis towards a first pocket peripheral surface. A second stress relief surface is formed between the first stress relief surface and the first pocket peripheral surface. The second stress relief surface has a convex shape in a cross-sectional view taken in a second plane containing the first axis. The convex shape may have a radius greater than 0.3 mm.

In a rotary cutting tool used for milling operations, a reversible cutting insert is removably secured in a cutting body. The cutting insert has two opposing end surfaces interconnected by a continuous peripheral surface, which includes three side surfaces alternating with three corner surfaces. The side and corner surfaces intersect with both end surfaces at side and corner edges, respectively, with each side edge having a major cutting edge, and each corner edge having a corner and minor cutting edge. Each minor cutting edge has a projected minor cutting length, in an end view, and each associated minor relief surface has a minor relief width between two lateral boundary points contained in a horizontal plane, varying with an offset distance between the horizontal plane and a median plane. Each projected minor cutting length is greater than the maximum minor relief width of its associated minor relief surface.

A single-sided ramping milling insert for ramping operations has top and bottom surfaces and a peripheral surface which extends therebetween. The peripheral surface meets the top and bottom surfaces at respective top and bottom edges. The top edge includes two opposite side cutting edges, two opposite ramping cutting edges, two diagonally opposite raised corner cutting edges and two diagonally opposite associated lowered corner cutting edges. The lowered corner cutting edges are closer to the bottom surface than the raised corner cutting edges. The bottom edge has two diagonally opposite bottom corner edges. The lowered corner cutting edges and the bottom corner edges are convexly curved and a depression is recessed into the peripheral surface between each lowered corner cutting edge and its associated bottom corner edge, the depression configured for providing relief from a convex workpiece surface cut by the lowered corner cutting edge during ramping operations.

A cutting insert having a pentagonal prismatic shape. A cutting region is associated with each polygonal side and is elevated with respect to a central tangential abutment surface. A primary cutting edge associated with a polygonal side is formed at the intersection of a primary rake surface and a primary relief surface. A secondary cutting edge associated with a rounded corner is formed at the intersection of a secondary rake surface and a secondary relief surface and merges with the primary cutting edge. The primary relief surface forms with the associated side abutment surface a primary relief surface angle that varies from a maximal value adjacent an upper end of the primary cutting edge to a minimal value. The secondary relief surface forms with the associated rounded corner a secondary relief surface angle that varies from a maximal value adjacent the primary cutting edge to a minimal value.

Cutting insert

An indexable cutting insert and a milling cutter with identical indexable cutting inserts. The indexable cutting insert has an upper surface, opposing lower surface, and a peripheral side surface. Major cutting edges are formed on an upper peripheral edge, with adjacent major rake surfaces on the upper surface. At least two of the major cutting edges have different insert axial rake angles at equivalent index points along the major cutting edges, and at least two of the major rake surfaces have different rake surface profile angles at planar sections which are perpendicular to the major cutting edges and contain an insert axis. The milling cutter has a milling cutter body with a plurality of identical insert receiving pockets, where an equal number of the identical indexable cutting inserts are removably seated, having active major cutting edges and active major rake surfaces with different axial and/or radial rake angles.

A method for manufacturing a cutting insert green body having undercuts includes providing a die cavity formed in closed top and bottom dies; closing a bottom of the die cavity by a bottom punch accommodated in a punch tunnel formed in the bottom die; filling the die cavity with a pre-determined amount of sinterable powder; moving a top punch towards the die cavity through a punch tunnel formed in the top die; compacting the powder by urging the top and bottom punches towards each other, thereby forming the green body; and moving the top die and punch away from the bottom die and punch, thereby enabling removal of the formed green body. An apparatus for manufacturing a cutting insert green body having undercuts includes top and bottom dies which abut each other and top and bottom punches which slide in their respective dies.

An adaptor () secures a cutting head () to a tool holder () having a passage for fluid. The adaptor () has a corresponding passage () for fluid to which a nozzle () is connected for the distribution of fluid towards a cutting region () of the cutting head ().

A four-sided cutting insert has a top surface, a bottom surface, and a pair of first side surfaces connected to a pair of second side surfaces via corner surfaces. The cutting insert has a rotational axis of symmetry, a first axis extending along the first side surfaces and second axis extending along the second side surfaces. Opposite corners of the cutting insert are provided with a first pair of corner edges defined between a first edge and an associated second edge. Proximate its leading end, the first edge has a main portion which, in a top view of the insert, extends inwardly toward the first axis at a first angle. In a side view, the first edge slopes downwardly from the corner edge in the direction of the base surface. The associated second edge, in the top view of the insert, extends from the corner edge in an outward direction relative to the second axis.

Cutting tool and cutting insert

A double-sided reversible and indexable cutting insert has identical opposing first and second end faces and a peripheral side surface extending therebetween. A clamping through-bore extends between, and opens out to, the first and second end faces. The cutting insert has a median plane between the first and second end faces, and a through-bore axis extending perpendicularly through the median plane. The cutting insert also has a Y-fold rotational symmetry about the through-bore axis. The peripheral side surface has Y major side surfaces and Y minor side surfaces, each minor side surface interconnecting two adjacent major side surfaces. Each minor side surface is a section of a single cylindrical surface having a given radius, the given radius being greater than a minor side surface distance of each minor side surface from the through-bore axis.

A double-sided cutting insert, for use in a milling cutter, having two identical opposing end surfaces and two opposing identical major side surfaces with a through bore extending between, and opening out to, the major side surfaces. Major cutting edges are formed at the intersection of each major side surface with each end surface. Adjacent each major cutting edge, in each major side surface, is a primary relief surface. In each cross section of the cutting insert taken in a plane generally perpendicular to the major side surfaces, a line tangent to the primary relief surface at the major cutting edge is inclined to a median plane of the cutting insert at an acute interior angle.
