A method includes receiving, at an access server, a communication from a network management device. The communication is sent from a mobile device via an unsecured wireless connection of a first network to an access point, from the access point to the network management device, and from the network management device via a second network to the access server. The communication includes first encrypted data and is associated with a request by the mobile device to access the second network. The method further includes transmitting, from the access server, an encryption key to the access point based on the first encrypted data to enable the access point to establish a secure wireless connection between the access point and the mobile device. The method further includes transmitting signals to the network management device, the signals indicating that the mobile device is authorized to access the second network.

Securing communications of a wireless access point and a mobile device

A technique for providing users with in-flight connectivity includes a method for operating a communications system on an aircraft comprising allocating to a communications session between equipment on the aircraft and other equipment, a first bandwidth allocation of a selected communications system selected from the group consisting of a satellite communications system and an air-to-ground communications system. The allocating is based on a latency tolerance of the communications session and a prioritization level of the communications session. The method includes communicating signals of the communications session using the first bandwidth allocation of the selected communications system.

Hybrid air-to-ground and satellite system traffic management

In one or more embodiments, a network provider can receive a request to access a public network via a wireless network implemented via one or more wireless access points. The network provider can receive, via an unsecured wireless communication from a mobile device utilizing the wireless network and via a hypertext transfer protocol secure (HTTPS), an encryption key usable to secure wireless communications from the mobile device utilizing the wireless network. The encryption key can be encrypted via a public encryption key, received from the network provider or previously stored by the mobile device, associated with the network provider. The network provider can decrypt the encryption key and can provide the encryption key to a wireless access point implementing the wireless network and communicating with the mobile device. The wireless access point and the mobile device can communicate in a secure fashion based on the encryption key.

In one or more embodiments, one or more methods and/or systems described can perform determining a position of a mobile device coupled to a first network; determining that the position of the mobile device is within a communications range of at least one wireless access point coupled to a second network; and transmitting a first signal to the mobile device via the first network, where the first signal indicates to apply power or greater power to a transceiver configured to communicate with the at least one wireless access point. In one or more embodiments, the mobile device can include a first transceiver configured to communicate with the first network and a second transceiver configured to communicate with the second network via the at least one wireless access point and can perform receiving the first signal from the first network and applying power or greater power to the second transceiver.

System-assisted wireless local area network detection

A packet-based communications network is dimensioned based on a maximum number of users able to receive a predetermined target throughput of data over a predetermined number of channels. For each of an incremental number of users, at least one blocking probability is calculated, based on a traffic distribution model, and a service delay is calculated, based on the blocking probability. An iterative throughput, corresponding to each of the incremental number of users, is determined based on the corresponding blocking probability and service delay. Each iterative throughput is compared to the target throughput. The maximum number of users is identified as the number of users having a corresponding iterative throughput that is closest to and less than target throughput.

A method of providing telecommunication service via a terminating device aboard an aircraft is disclosed and includes receiving data related to identification information included on an aircraft boarding pass at a boarding pass reader interface. The method also includes determining, based on the data, that a passenger identified by the boarding pass is a subscriber of a service to forward calls placed to a mobile terminal of the passenger to a terminating device accessible to the passenger aboard an aircraft associated with the boarding pass. The service is automatically activated with respect to the passenger when the identification information indicates that the service is to be activated.

Global roaming services for telecommunications systems

A packet-based communications network is dimensioned based on a maximum number of users able to receive a predetermined target throughput of data over a predetermined number of channels. For each of an incremental number of users, at least one blocking probability is calculated, based on a traffic distribution model, and a service delay is calculated, based on the blocking probability. An iterative throughput, corresponding to each of the incremental number of users, is determined based on the corresponding blocking probability and service delay. Each iterative throughput is compared to the target throughput. A system and method for extending a user's communications services to an airplane seat telephone terminal proximate the user while the user is aboard an airplane is provided. The system includes a Subscriber Interface (SI) for providing a Subscriber Identity Record (SIR) including the user's flight data and a Universal Communications Address (UCA), and a Subscriber Location Register (SLR) adapted to receive the subscriber identity record from the subscriber interface and communicate with a home location register associated with the user to provide a subscriber location in response to a telephone call placed to the user's Universal Communications Address. The Universal Communications Address can be a Mobile Station ISDN number associated with a wireless user terminal or an ISDN/PSTN number associated with a wireline telephone of said user.
