Interchangeable illumination modules having different optical characteristics illuminate a target to be electro-optically read by image capture. Each module includes an illuminating light source for emitting illuminating light, and a support for supporting the illuminating light source for joint movement as a discrete unit from a removed position away from a reader to a mounted position on the reader. The support is accessible exteriorly of the reader in the mounted position. Electrical contacts mounted on the support are exposed exteriorly of the support for supplying an illumination control signal from the reader to the illuminating light source to energize the illuminating light source in the mounted position.

A lightweight, compact image projection module, especially for mounting in a housing having a light-transmissive window, is operative for causing selected pixels in a raster pattern of scan lines to be illuminated to produce an image of high resolution in color. The present invention further relates to systems and methodologies for facilitating communication to the mobile terminal from the plurality of headsets. The plurality of headsets can be of various types. For example, the headset can be a push button enabled signaling headset, which includes a signaling mechanism, such as a button, mounted to the headset or a headset cord. The mobile terminal includes a sensing component to detect the signaling from the headset. The signaling mechanism is employed to issue commands to the mobile terminal. Alternatively, the headset can be a standard, commercially available audio headset. If the standard headset is employed, the signaling function is not available and the standard headset operation is not impacted.

Described is a method and system for authenticating identity of a person using a portable device. The portable device may includes an imager, an image processing unit and a processor. The image processing unit reads encoded data in a first image from an imager of the device. The image processing unit extracts a portion of a second image from the imager to generate extracted portion data. The extracted portion of the second image corresponds to a portion of a person whose identity is to be authenticated. Stored biometric data for a person is located based on the data read from the first image. The processor compares the extracted portion data of the second image to the stored biometric data for a person.

System and method for mobile biometric authentication

A composite laser beam is swept as a pattern of scan lines on a projection surface, and selected pixels arranged along each scan line are illuminated to project an image of high quality and in color. Color image projection arrangement and method

A laser beam is swept by a scan mirror as a pattern of scan lines on a projection surface. The scan mirror moves at a variable speed along each scan line. Each scan line has a number of pixels. The pixels have time durations proportional to the variable speed of the scan mirror. A profile memory stores the time durations of the pixels. A controller causes selected pixels arranged along each scan line to be illuminated for the time durations stored by the profile memory to produce an image of uniform brightness and of uniformly sized pixels and in color.

An integrated optical module for an optical scanner has a lens spaced from a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) by a spacer of defined dimensions. The module, in an alternative embodiment, includes a wafer frame, a suspended mirror mounted for oscillation on the frame, a wafer substrate bonded beneath the frame and a wafer cover bonded above the frame. The cover includes a mirror travel stop to protect the mirror against shocks. A VCSEL mounted to the wafer cover produces a beam which is shaped and deflected by a diffractive optical element onto the oscillating mirror. The reflected beam passes out of the module toward an indicia to be read. Large numbers of such devices may be fabricated relatively cheaply using wafer-scale processing and assembly technology. Three large wafers are fabricated corresponding respectively to arrays of substrates, frames and covers. The large wafers are bonded together in a sandwich arrangement, and are then diced to produce the individual scan modules. The modules may provide either one-dimensional or two-dimensional scanning.

An optical scanner module for directing a light beam to scan an optically encoded symbol includes an optical element mounted for oscillatory motion to scan the light beam in one direction by a flex element capable of torsional flexure. This oscillatory motion is induced by the interacting magnetic fields established by a permanent magnet mounted to the flex element and an electromagnetic coil driven by an AC current. Bidirectional light beam scanning is achieved by mounting an assembly of the flex element, optical element and permanent magnet to one or more additional flex elements for oscillatory motion to scan the light beam in a second direction. This oscillatory motion is induced by the inclusion of an additional permanent magnet and/or electromagnetic coil.

To reduce the size and weight of an optical scanner, the present invention provides a mirrorless beam scanning unit. A flexible member, such as a multi-wire, flat, electrical cable is connected to the light emitter. Reciprocation of the light emitter during emission of light by the light emitter causes the light to scan a surface, such as a surface bearing a bar code label. The cable flexes during such reciprocation.
