A method for processing heavy nonferrous metal raw materials by heating and melting said raw materials in a molten slag with the formation of a heterogeneous melt consisting of a sulfide and an oxide phases. The melt is bubbled oxidized by injecting a gas containing not less than 35% oxygen at an intensity of about 200 to about 2000 m.sup.3 STP/h per square meter of horizontal section of the melt, with the effect that the melt is divided into a top bubbled part and a bottom calm part comprising a slag layer, a matte layer and/or a crude metal layer, each of which is tapped separately. A furnace for putting said method into effect is a shaft terminating in its bottom part by a hearth and having devices for tapping smelting products, whereas the top part is provided with orifices for feeding a charge and removing gaseous smelting products. The furnace has cooled side tuyeres set at a level dividing the shaft into two vertical parts. The device for tapping slag from the bottom part of the slag layer is formed with a recipient communicating with the internal cavity of the shaft by means of a duct arranged below the tuyere level, but above the level of the matte inside the shaft. Said technological sequence of operations and the furnace design provide a possibility of separating polymetallic raw materials by a single-stage process into smelting products and denuded slag. It is most effective to employ the present invention for processing high-sulfur copper, nickel, copper-nickel and copper-zinc raw materials.

Pyrometallurgical method for processing heavy nonferrous metal raw

A process for recovering gallium from alkali aluminate solutions which consists in that the starting alkali aluminate solution is neutralized to a concentration of the caustic alkali of from 0.1 to 10 g/l, whereafter the neutralized liquor is evaporated to a concentration of the caustic alkali therein of from 30 to 150 g/l. Then the evaporated solution is corrected to obtain the ratio between the alkali metal oxide and alumina of above 2.0. The corrected solution is treated with a liquid alloy of gallium containing an element possessing an oxidizing potential exceeding that of gallium to give a concentrate containing more than 90% of gallium by mass, wherafter gallium of a higher purity grade is recovered from the resulting concentrate by the electrochemical method. The process according to the present invention makes it possible to recover gallium from alkali solutions resulting from the treatment of nephelines with the production of a 90% gallium concentrate, wherefrom gallium of an increased purity is obtained at relatively low cost. Processing of the concentrate with the production of gallium is simple, it is not encountered with any additional expenses and requires no additional equipment. Another advantage of the process resides in a more comprehensive utilization of low-grade aluminum-containing ores.

Process for recovering gallium from alkali aluminate solutions resulting

A process for the extraction of gallium from sodium aluminate liquors comprises extracting gallium from aluminate liquors by cementation with the aid of a liquid gallium-aluminum alloy. Aluminate liquors produced in the Bayer process, prior to cementation, are freed from various impurities. To this end, the recycle aluminate liquor is cooled to a temperature at which soda crystallizes and vanadium is retained in the liquor, whereupon the crystallized precipitate is separated, while the residual liquor is mixed with the mother aluminate liquor in the ratio of 0.1-1 to 1-0.1. The resultant liquor is cooled down to ambient temperature, and the vanadium precipitate is separated. The process is a major step towards a simpler technique of gallium extraction from aluminate liquors both high and low in gallium. Also, the process permits extracting, directly from aluminate liquors, gallium in a higher degree of purity than can be obtained in the prior art. Furthermore, the process enables valuable vanadium compounds to be recovered from liquors alongside gallium.
