To report feedback information regarding a wireless channel, a mobile station determines whether a predefined condition is satisfied. In response to determining that the predefined condition is satisfied, feedback information regarding an individual one of plural subbands of the wireless channel is included in a first report to be sent to a base station. In response to determining that the predefined condition is not satisfied, aggregate feedback information regarding the plural subbands is included in a second report to be sent to the base station.

A method selects mobile station candidates for use with virtual multiple-input multiple-output ('V-MIMO') in a communication system. The communication system includes at least one base station and a plurality of mobile stations. At least one downlink metric is determined for a first mobile station. The at least one downlink metric is used to determine eligibility for uplink V-MIMO candidate list selection. Responsive to determining that the first mobile station is eligible for uplink V-MIMO candidate list selection, the first mobile station is paired with a second mobile station eligible for uplink V-MIMO candidate list selection.

A method, scheduler, and processor program product for scheduling transmission of packets from a base station to a mobile station. A data rate control index is received from a mobile station. A transmission format is selected using the received data rate control index. The selected transmission format uses a payload size that is smaller than a largest compatible payload size for another transmission format corresponding to the received data rate control index and that is smaller than a total size of packets waiting to be transmitted.

Transmission format selection for optimizing transmission of delay sensitive traffic

The present invention supports a scheduling protocol on a wireless communication network to transmit data packets stored in a queue from a user. Two performance metrics are generated and summed to provide a priority. The performance metrics are based on the delay for the data packets stored in the queue and the rate that the data packets can be transmitted on the network. The user with the higher calculated priority for the current time slot has its data packets transmitted.

Optimized scheduling method for delay-sensitive traffic on high speed shared packet data channels

A method to increase spectral efficiency in a communication system is described herein. The communication system includes at least one mobile station and is capable of transmitting messages encoded according to a plurality of available modulation coding schemes ('MCSs'). Each available MCS includes a modulation scheme and an effective coding rate. The MCSs are indexed according to increasing complexity. A signal-to-interference ratio ('SINR') is determined which is sufficient to satisfy a predetermined frame error rate (&#x201c;FER&#x201d;). A first MCS and a corresponding amount of transmissions needed to satisfy the predetermined FER at the SINR using the first MCS are determined. The first MCS has a higher effective coding rate than a second MCS. The second MCS sufficiently satisfies the predetermined FER at the SINR in a single transmission. A message encoded according to the first MCS is transmitted through the communication system using hybrid automatic repeat request (&#x201c;HARQ&#x201d;).

Method and apparatus for spectrally efficient link adaptation using HARQ in OFDMA systems

A method, apparatus, and computer-readable medium encoded with computer-executable instructions for transmitting delay sensitive packets. A data rate control index is received from a mobile station for use in transmitting the delay sensitive packets to the mobile station. A transmission format is selected using the received data rate control index to form a selected transmission format. The selected transmission format uses a payload size that is smaller than a largest compatible payload size for another transmission format corresponding to the data rate control index and is selected to reduce transmission time of the packets. The delay sensitive packets are transmitted to the mobile station using the selected transmission format.

A method, apparatus, and computer usable program code for creating a pseudo user from a plurality of users. Packets from the buffers are combined for the plurality of users into a buffer for the pseudo user. A multi-user packet is formed using packets from the pseudo user buffer, wherein the packets have older expiration times as compared to expiration times of other packets in the pseudo user buffer. Multi-user scheduling for optimizing transmission of delay sensitive traffic

A wireless communication network is able to perform fast reverse link scheduling by providing data to a user terminal to enable it to select parameters that a base station is to use when scheduling a reverse link transmission. The user terminal that is in hand-off and is communicating with a plurality of base stations selects among the received network measured parameters from a plurality of base station transceiver sets to prompt each base station transceiver set to utilize a set of network parameters that will not likely cause excessive interference or drop offs in any of the cells supported by the base station transceiver set with which the user terminal is communicating. Responsive to receiving the user terminal selected network parameters, each BTS determines when to transmit a burst of data, the data rate and a power level for the data for the user terminal. While the network parameters transmitted by the BTSs to the user terminal may comprise many different types of signals, the described embodiment includes received reverse link signal energy measurements and rise over thermal (ROT) measurements.
