A method is used in reserving storage space in data storage systems. A set of logical units (LUs) predefined as file based storage hardware specific LUs are reserved in a restricted access storage space of a block based storage system. The restricted access storage space is accessed by a file based storage system for storing information required for initializing the file based storage system. The file based storage system is initialized using the information stored in the file based storage hardware specific LUs.

Reserving storage space in data storage systems

A method is used in managing initialization of file systems. Activity of file systems is monitored. The file systems include a first and second set of file systems. Based on activity of the file systems, the first set of file systems is associated with a first section of a boot configuration file and the second set of file systems is associated with a second section of the boot configuration file. The first and second sets of file systems are initialized for providing access to the first and second sets of file systems. Access to the first set of file systems is provided before initializing the second set of file systems.

Managing initialization of file systems

A method for adding file based storage hardware to a block based storage system includes detecting, by the file based storage hardware, an electrical coupling between the file based storage hardware and the block based storage system, the block based storage system having a set of logical units (LUs) predefined as file based storage hardware specific LUs. The method includes forwarding, by the file based storage hardware, an initiator record to the block based storage system, the initiator record configured to control access by the file based storage hardware to data stored by the block based storage system and the initiator record having a file based storage hardware specific identifier. The method includes, following the block based storage system associating the initiator record having the file based storage hardware specific identifier with the predefined file based storage hardware specific LUs, establishing a communication path with the block based storage system.

Automated addition of file based hardware and file based access services in a data storage system

A method and system are described for reducing search for data in a directory scheme employing hash tables. The method involves compacting directory entries in a manner in which the directory entries will gradually migrate and concentrate at the highest level hash tables which coincide with early blocks in a hash table sequence representing the directory.
