Humid air turbine cycle with carbon dioxide recovery

A turbine produces in an improved gasification process a stream of pressurized air, which is cooled and further compressed by a cooler and booster/compressor. The cooled and compressed air is humidified in a humidifier, heated by a low temperature heat source and subsequently fed into a gasification vessel in which a feedstock is gasified or partially oxidized. The humidifier may advantageously utilize wastewater to humidify the cooled and compressed air, wherein the wastewater may or may not be produced by a component in a gasification plant.

Configuration and process for gasification of carbonaceous materials

In a combined cycle gasification plant, high pressure fuel gas from the gasification unit is heated prior to combustion, and is then used to dry the feedstock. The moist fuel gas from the drying operation is combusted to drive the turbine. Alternatively, high-pressure inert gas such as nitrogen is heated in the gasification unit and is then used to dry the coal feed. Some of the moist inert gas is recycled, and some if it is passed to the combustion turbine.

An improved combustion-turbine cycle system and process which employs a multi-stage, counter-current flow humidifier to produce moist air for use as combustion air and thermal diluent in a combuster in which the improvement includes utilizing excess fluid produced in the humidifier as a working fluid in a separate, parallel excess fluid turbine and/or as combustion air and thermal diluent for an additional, separate combuster having its own turbine and operating in parallel with the primary combustion turbine machine.

An improved method for producing mechanical work from synthesis gas streams by exothermic, catalytic reaction of the stream, partial conversion to mechanical work by use of an expansion turbine and further conversion to mechanical work in a downstream heat engine.

A process is disclosed for producing mechanical energy or electric power from chemical energy contained in a fuel, utilizing a combustion turbine. The compressed air which is used for combustion of the fuel to drive the turbine is humidified prior to combustion in a multistage countercurrent saturator to replace some or all of the thermal diluent air with water vapor. Humidification is effected with the water at a temperature below its boiling point at the operating pressure. The compressed air is cooled prior to humidification by passing in heat exchange relationship with the water used for humidification. Low level heat is rejected from the compressed air during intercooling and prior to humidification. This process provides a significant improvement in thermal efficiency, compared to combined cycle, steam injected cycle, intercooled regenerative cycle, and other air humidification based processes. Additionally, the entire steam cycle of a combined cycle process is eliminated, including the steam turbine generator, steam drums, surface condenser and cooling towers.
