Methods that may be performed by a processor of a computing device. Embodiments may include generating general inferences from personal data from the computing device in a manner that disassociates the general inferences from a user identity related to the personal data, coding the general inferences into a dynamic identifier (ID) configured to disassociate the dynamic ID from the user identity related to the personal data, and maintaining the dynamic ID at the computing device for use of the Dynamic ID at the computing device. Embodiments may include making the dynamic ID available for use at the computing device by an advertising software and/or an application developed by an independent software vendor configured to select advertisements at the computing device based on at least one of the general inferences of the dynamic ID.

Techniques are provided for utilizing wireless devices for contact tracing, and more specifically for detecting a barrier between devices to enhance contact tracing applications. An example method for detecting a barrier between a first device and a second device includes determining, by the first device, a first range measurement with respect to the second device using a first positioning technique determining, by the first device, a second range measurement with respect to the second device using a second positioning technique that is different from the first positioning technique, and detecting the barrier between the first device and the second device based on the first range measurement and the second range measurement.

In one aspect, a method performed by an access point in a wireless local area network (WLAN), includes receiving a first ranging request message from a first device and monitoring for a second ranging request message from a second device on a channel of the WLAN. The first ranging request message includes a device identifier of the first device and the second ranging request message includes a device identifier of the second device. In response to receiving the second ranging request message, the access point combines the device identifier of the first device, first timing information associated with the first ranging request message, the device identifier of the second device, and second timing information associated with the second ranging request message into a single ranging response message. A database for location or geographic based services is secured by requiring location based requests to include a unique identifier that identifies the location as well as an authorization identifier associated with the location. The authorization identifier is information that is obtained by being physically present at the location, such as information from access points that are at the location or a position fix when present at the location. The authorization identifier may be non-unique but relatively time-invariant, making such information easily crowdsourced, but difficult to obtain unless physically present at the location. For example, the authorization identifier may be an SSID or a Beacon Frame, or a hash thereof from one or more devices at the location or a position fix.
